Fishing off PC this morning.  I was about 1/4 mile west of the rock.  It was about 10:30, and the mornings fishing had been decent, I needed one more ling for my limit..  Pulled up my gear at the end of the drift and was heading up current for another drift.  Off the left side of the yak my eye catches something. I think cool more black rocks on the surface, earlier that morning I got my seven rockfish all on top, Awesome!  Not rockfish.. but a fin.. second thought, cool Porpoises, not that uncommon to see out there.  Porpoises behave like little whales and you mostly only  see them when they breath.  This fin parrelled me at about 30 yards while I pedaled the Hobie at least 3-4 mph.  It was moving smoothly with a little side to side wiggle, the fin was slipping up and down going from just below the surface to a foot above. The fish never broke the surface in at least 3-5 minutes to breath all the time (this encounter took place) all the while the distance between me and the fin got smaller and smaller.  It was about 15yards off me and headed toward me at a gradual angle.  I stopped pedaling thinking it was probably tracking my movement and the turbo fins flipper like action   thinking I was food, if I stopped with no "heartbeat/movement" I thought it might think I was not food.  I had gone from "oh cool wildlife" to "OH F&$*K" fairly quickly.  I scrambled for the camera in my vest and grabbed my gaff (why I don't know) its now heading right at the yak at a slow stead speed.  I think "do something to scare away it NOW stupid"  So I splash the water with the gaff and hit the side of the yak with the fiberglass shaft (yes I'm scared SHITLESS at this point) and then think perhaps splashy splashy in front of sharky sharky might not be that smart.  With my left hand I try to take a few pics and take one as it slides under the yak at about 12-15ft deep , I could see shape/shadow but not detail.  It appeared about was about as wide as my yak (hobie adventure) and a guess would be 10-12ft ish  long.   I saw it turn towards the rear of the yak and all I could think about was those seals off the tip of South Africa etc..  I didn't want to get hit and not see it coming so I decided to risk the motion of the turbo fins and vacate the scene ASAFP.  I made a hard bee line to a dory about 100yrds away hoping it would not follow and if it did I could get assistance from the Dory and perhaps the boat would be a deterrent.  I never saw it again. Needless to say I pulled the plug on the days fishing setting a new yak speed record back to the beach! Yes I was very spooked and to be frank still am

First pic is the fin as it heads toward the yak at about 20-25ft (not the best, but for the situation left handed I as happy to get anything), second is an attempt at getting a shot as it went under the yak its not very clear and is one of those "there's something there but you can't tell what Bigfoot style pics".  What a day to leave the gopro at home ??? Needless to say I think I take a hike in the woods tomorrow  ;D;D

Wow.  Glad to hear that it didn't mess with you!  I have no idea what I would have done in that situation.  I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone reports something like this from PC.  With more and more people kayak fishing there, I imagine this type of report will start to pop it's head up every one in a while.

"I think we need a bigger boat". Visions of Jaws. Looks like a shark fin in the 1st pic ???. 2nd pic looks like water mixed with the load you let loose from the relief zipper. Glad you made it in safe PP.

[shark_nerd_wannabe] Sounds like classic shark behavior. Can't exactly see in the pic but was the fin triangular w/ a sharp tip? It kind of looks like a blue's dorsal fin but as wide as your yak? More likely mako, salmon shark, or whitey himself.[/shark_nerd_wannabe]

Really glad you're ok. Way to keep a cool head.

There's a lot of downside to the inner Sound around area 11, but sharks aint one of them, thank god.

The more I look at the second pic the more I think it doesn't show anything.. I could see the shark, dark top, mottled white underside (shape/outline/shadow) under the yak when I took the pic but honestly I don't think the camera got any of it, more like just surface wave clutter, it was just to deep to pick up is my guess.  The shark would have been centered in the shot with the head (or actually midsection by the time I snapped the pic) towards the bottom.  I just don't see it.

It looks like Nessie, but you just cut off her head. ;D

Glad it didn't harass you any farther.  Did you feel like an itty bitty worm on a great big hook?

This is a hair-raising story. I am going to try to forget I read it. But I'm glad you're ok, pelagic.
