Got tired of trying to keep up with my fishing buddies, so I retired the FreedomHawk to bugwanding lakes and picked up an Outback for river and coastal fishing.  I am outfitting it with Turbo fins and a sailing rudder, but need advice as to where to put the transducer. In my research it says that fiberglass has the same transducive qualities of water. How about roto molded plastic?  Can I place it inside the hull with epoxy and still get the performance as if outside?  How about GPS placement and other gadgetry?

Time to start the Madness of outfitting.

The crew in San Diego have a great video blog site.  One of the video's is on how to install a fishfinder on a Hobie.

Yes, roto-plastic has similar transducive qualities as water and many people mount their 'ducers inside.

Would love to hear more about the FreedomHawk and your perceptions on why it apparently slows you down.

Congrats on the new boat.  This is pretty much what I did, except with my own battery pack. I also ran my cable out under the front hatch so I can stow the wires when not in use.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Freedom Hawk. In my opinion It can't be beat for the lakes and flat water fishing.  It is designed to be a stable platform to stand and cast from.  I will continue to use it for that. It is a kick to stand on the water and cast over logs and weeds. The split tail pontoons in the back, by nature, do cause drag in the water. The trade-off for stability is increased drag.  The conversations about the Revo and Outback demonstrate this point.

I really comes down to the Outback being a better platform for the Ocean and big water rivers. More capacity and a much more efficient drive.  When I was struggling with wind and waves, my friend would be waiting on the dock when I came in.  Even with my electric motor on high the Outback beat us in.

So, as someone said earlier, I started off with one kayak, then came a trailer, then another kayak.  They are multiplying like rabbits.

I'm about to install a transducer in my new outback. The other thing to keep in mind from the other thread is to make sure your sonar "cone" beam isn't going to get interference from the mirage drive.
