Howdy,

Not only am I brand new to this site, I'm also pretty green when I comes to fishing. I recently bought a Hobie Mirage Adventure with a Scotty downrigger and a fish finder (yes, the one that was for sale in the classifieds) and want to figure out where I should take it, what I should fish for, and how to fish. Like I said, pretty green.

I'm in the North Everett area. I'm still waiting on my car rack for the yak, so I'll be hitting the water in about a week. Anybody willing to show a newbie the ropes? I appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,

Jereme

Jereme,

I am on my second Hobie, a Revo.  I am from NorCal Kayak Anglers and do most of my ocean fishing in the Fort Bragg, CA area.  I am returning from an Alaska trip with my Revo and will be in Anacortes for a few days starting the 14th.  I have salmon and rock fish gear with me.  If you know of a safe place to get in the ocean I would be glad to share how we fish in NorCal.

Welcome to NWKA jereme. I know there are a few guys in that vicinity.

I come up to Langley usually once a year and bring my yaks with me. Would be cool to set up a group fish while there.

I'll be sure to post up when i do.
See ya on the water..

Hi,

Thank you for the offer. I think I'm going to hit some lakes a few more times to get used to my new setup before hitting the sound, so this weekend is a little too soon for me.

Definitely looking forward to Langley when it happens. What all do you fish for there?

Welcome Aboard, sounds like you got a pretty sweet set-up.  If you are ever out in the Port Angeles area would enjoy fishing with you.  I like to head out to Neah Bay too.  Fun fishing out there.

Don't forget to practice your self-rescue.  Do it close to shore on a calm lake, so if you can't get back on you can flail both yourself and your yak back to shore.

Do you have a PFD and appropriate attire?  I am pretty sure that if you do not, you'll have a hard time finding NWKA members to fish with you.  I see folks kayaking on Puget Sound all the time in both SINKs and SOTs with which I would not buddy up.  They go out in fleece and shorts.  Even in the summer they would last 30 minutes in the water - the skinnier the shorter their survival time.

One thing we all are on this site is safety conscious.  My guess is that if you could afford a Hobie Adventure, you should also be able to afford a good PFD and dry/semi-dry suit.

The Coast Guard has a "50-50-50" rule: You have a 50-percent survival rate if you are in 50 degree F water for 50 minutes. However, you can increase those odds if you stay calm and know what to do to survive.  If wearing a dry suit or full wet suit, you're going to be able to get back aboard in good shape, in the unlikely event of a fall overboard.  In the surf, upsets are the rule, in lakes or calm Sound, unlikely.  But we dress for the water temp, not the air temp. Hree's a good dry suit in ODX:

The Kokatat lightweight paddling suit, and the Kokatat tropos Angler, set the standard,  there are good deals from Stohlquist too.

I visit family in Langley, the fishing is elsewhere. Bush point is close for pinks, would be a great place to  launch yaks when it's not blowing wind... I don't know the fishing area that well as i just visit occasionally. I'll be relying on the locals for their knowledge.

See ya on the water..

Bush Point: You can launch from the north side of the restaurant.  You may be able to launch from the private boat launch just south of the point.  You would have to find parking, perhaps the grass north of the boathouse, because the vehicle access to the ramp is gated.  Short walk of a couple 100 feet.  You can see both locations on Google Earth.

Obviously, watch the current around the point.  I have caught numerous pinks and one small king from the beach both north and south of the point.

I've never tried it but have often thought the south part of Mutiny Bay (Double Bluff) may be good fishing.  Mutiny bay has a boat launch ramp and parking right at the eastern most extent of the shoreline.  Again, you can see it from GE.  You may want to time your launch to ride the current south to the bluff, then ride the opposite tide back.  It's about 1.5nm from the launch to the bluff.
