Well nuts!! Ok, I may be new to kayaks but I'm not new to fasteners. So, went to place two Scotty flush mount 444 rod holders (round ones) on my T120 today and now have 5 holes in my boat without any rod holders. They are going to be placed right behind the seat with no access to the inside. So, get well nuts I was told. Took a ferry off the island and drove all over hell on a Sunday to find them (Lowe's in Renton).   :-\
A decision I now regret.

So words of advice- find the longest well nuts out there (>1"). Make the hole smaller than the well nut and don't use any sealant or silicone before inserting them. They slip right thru the hole! I don't really know if having a 1" well nut is going to make a difference. I will probably end up glueing a piece of plastic on the inside where all the holes are (will not be easy). Essentially, starting over. May just use beefy plastic anchors!

I am now sitting outside enjoying what's left of the weekend with a beer. I will re-visit the project next week. Ugh.

Well nuts work ok, but you have to drill big holes as you figured out.  When I can't reach inside the hull I prefer rivets as the hole is smaller and they are pretty damn solid.

I am not familiar with the well nuts.  Are the holes too large to now try and use Rivets as Ndogg mentioned ?
I just ordered a bunch of Tri-Split rivets as most kayak manufactures use and will have more than I will need.  I would be happy to send what you need if they are still an option for you.

I would say so. I am going to work on it this weekend. Most likely end up using some beefy wall anchors. I'm not too worried as the boat still has plenty of plastic in the spot with the holes. And this particular mount will be for the net (cheap and light weight). Thanks for your offer though. Very kind. When I figure how to post pictures, I'll show you the finished product.

There are centuries of experience represented on this forum.  You might want to take CraigVM62 up on his rivet offer.

Ok, so if I can't get it figured out this weekend, I'll definitely take CraigVM62 up on his offer!

I just checked the extra Scotty bases I have and their holes are 1/4" which means you could step up to a rivet up to that same dimension.   What size holes do you have now for the well nuts ?      Even if you can not reach the area by hand,  there are tricks that would allow you to place a backer washer, and / or even a nut.  As long as you can look down some access point and see below where your working.   It takes a bit of time, but do-able.

Ok, figured it out and got the flush mount installed. Thanks for all the great advice. Found longer expansion nuts at the local Hdwe store. Tight as a drum. But will go to rivets next time around!

And thanks for the heads up from Squidgirl. Kallitype and I have met and will be going out for silvers as soon as he gets back from SJs.

Cheers!  :)
