Up until last week I was really not interested in getting a smart phone.  Mainly because I don't even use my dumb phone much.  However, it was time to upgrade our phones (every 2 years), and add a phone to my plan for my 14 yr old daughter to keep in contact with us for after school (high school) activities.

One of the other leading reasons I didn't jump on then smart phone bandwagon earlier is that I am hard on my toys, and require either a cheap or rugged phone.  In the course of scouting out what dumb phone I could upgrade to, I ran across the Casio Gz'One Commando running the Droid software.

Selling points:
1. Shock proof
2. Water proof
3. Dust proof

Military rated to 801G specifications for water (3.3ft for 30 minutes), dust, shock (at least 26 four-foot drops), salt fog, vibration, solar radiation, and temperature extremes (-13 to 185 ºF). Obviously, these specs are relative and probably not perfect in every situation, but I'll take it!  It's a huge step above relying on being extremely delicate with it compared to say an iPhone without external body armor and a dry bag condom covering it.

It is fast enough for me, does more than I need it to at this point and I have already tested the water just by dropping it in my water glass at work while turned on.  No issues.   ;D

I don't plan to stream video or even have it turned on while fishing in the local lakes or rivers (don't need no distractions), but I do plan to have it with me in the ocean.  I'll still put it in a phone specific dry bag while on the salt, as I know salt is cruel to things regardless if they are water proof, and the bag will allow tethering.

Nice phone.  Sometimes smatphones come in handy on the water when you need to verify your Coho is a Coho. ;D

The best thing I have found them to be useful for is to take a picture of yourself while fishing, then email it to all your co-workers stuck at work.  They appreciate it...I think.  Especially the ones stuck at an airport waiting for their delayed flight. ;D  It works best if you have actually caught a fish.

I had he original Gz'One flip phone for about three years a while back and it was awesome.  Indestructible!  I didn't know they had a smartphone version, Ill have to check when my upgrade is coming.

Or if you didn't catch a fish, just save a pic from a previous catch day and just flip it around and send that one.  ;D

or even better (or worst) pics of somebody else's fish... ::)

BTW: I'm loving the commando going on 6 months of vigorous testing. Salt water and sand? No problem.
But it does not float ::)
There is, however, a spot for a lanyard on the left edge near the bottom. Makes a great place to attach a piece of pool noodle or a small crab float that will make it float.

Homemade lanyard added.  I made a about a 4" loop of cord, so I can add a clip to it when heading near water.  Won't need to float if it isn't loose, right?  ;)

What I'm curious about is why you're turned on when dropping things into glasses of water at work  :-\  :-[  :o
