Newport Bay 10/15

BlueWrx02 and I are going down Thurs afternoon and plan to stay at Southbeach State Park. Then Friday morning we plan to launch at the marina (near the brewery). Heading towards the bridge to drop a few crab pots. Then down to the finger jetties for some rockfish. With any luck we'll be eating fish tacos and crab for dinner. Will be staying Friday night back at Southbeach as well.

Insayn ... Currently in LC wanting to go to Newport tomorrow. Could you give me a quick info regarding when to go regarding the tides. What do you use ? A friend says he uses 1/4 oz and 3 1/2 inch jigs. He says they average @ 12" would a larger jig catch larger fish... That sounds kindy small for the jig . But who knows. Heading out to crab in an hour.  Hope I get some info back by tomorrow. Thanks in advance. Anyone else with experience please chime in also.

The rule of thumb is drop your pots 2 hours before slack tide, and depending on the exchange you can do well for about the same duration after.

In Yaquina Bay, drop 'em up the bay a ways. Off the NOAA dock, or off the pilings by Idaho Point. Between the jetties is red rock crab city. At low tide the exposed area around the corner at I.P. you can score some nice clams.

Use chicken, because it's cheap. If the fur bags are thick, the store at S.B. Marina (used to anyway) sells mink carcasses. The seals don't like mink meat, and they are all grissle, they'll last a long time.

Small jigs as you listed are what I have used off that jetty, and Rawkfish confirmed to me last night that these are the go to lures he used while kayak fishing the same waters.

The fish won't be as big as the ones in the ocean, however you may get lucky and score a few good ones.  Don't let a 12" rockfish scare you away, as these will be younger, and less (if any) worms.  And they still have way more meat than a two 12" trout.

Never too small.  Some times that's all they bite, even on the open ocean.  And yes, you'll get a lot more small fish.

Honestly, I would be happy with a limit of seven 12" rock fish on a plan B salt trip, over a limit of five 12" trout fresh water trip any 'ol day.

The charts show it to be pretty deep and out of the main channel.

Bump!   Anybody else want to meet up with us?  Might be a dumb question but when they say Ocean is closed for Dungeness crab Oct. 16-Nov. 3.  Is this for the bays too?

I'm sure you'll do fine in there. Lots of people drop between the green can and the start of the N. jetty, out of the channel of course. 16-20 fow. Like I was saying, the closer to the jetty the more the red rockers will ravage your bait. Bring a nut cracker, their claws will chip your teeth.

Blue, the bays are wide open and ripe for the picking.

Crabbing was good today. We are now at south beach state park in site A7. Who ever wants to come out, feel free. We will be fishing tomorrow. Hope to see some of you out there or at camp!  Will post videos of INSAYN cleaning crab when I get to a WIFI spot.

Good luck guys.  Sorry, I couldn't get out there this week Insayn. 

I'm bummed I wanted to join you guys, but my trusty truck took a turd and I'm waiting on some parts. Hope you get some rockfish and perch for the fryer, good luck.

Sounds like a great time and thanks for the invite. Would like to join in on an outing in the near future but slammed this weekend. Here's to good conditions and fishing/crabbing. Looking forward to pics/vids.
