Took the canoe out today near charleston. Ive been hearing about a certain spot where a lot of salmon were being caught. Trolled a blue fox in circles for about ten minutes and hooked a nice coho. We quit after that because of all the boats flying past us without slowing down. I didnt have anything to club it with, so I used my paddle, but ended up breaking the handle. Fish lost a lot of scales from flopping around so long while i was trying to bonk it.

I forgot to measure the fish. It tasted pretty good though.  Hope its okay to talk about canoes on a kayak site. :P

Thanks. I might take the kayak out there today. If anyone wants to go, the spot is just off the end of the little jetty at point adams. Must be sort of a resting spot for the fish. People have been catching a lot of fish just casting off the end of the jetty. There were six people sitting there yesterday. None of the boats fish there because it is shallow. Good place for a kayak. The one i caught yesterday was about 100 yards straight off the end of the jetty. High tide is probably the best time.

   Hey Merz,
Instead of whacking a fish with your paddle and having related problems----try ripping out the gills next time you catch a salmon.Just put your fingers inside the gill plate, grab a handful of gills, and rip em out.Gaurenteed to subdue even the fiestiest salmon......and it doesn't break some of your other stuff....and you always have it with you.....no packing extra stuff. :o

Probably a good idea. Theres something satisfying about whacking them on the head. Sort of seals the deal. :)
Im not going to risk any more of my paddles though.

Another plus for rippin gills is that it will bleed out the salmon making for better tasting table fare.If you put in the time and expense to go fish--might as well take good care of your catch. You'll be glad you did in the long run.Oh---and put it on ice if that is an option.Too many fish get warm and mushy laying in the bottom of a boat. Not the best senario if you can do better.
And nice silver by the way.............

Yea I always try to bleed my fish. I live right on the water about a 5 minute paddle from where i caught the fish. I didnt want to get blood in the canoe, so i stuck it when i got to my house and let it bleed in the yard. Fish was filleted and in the freezer within 30 mins of catching.

Im not a huge salmon fan, so I try to make sure they taste as good as possible. I like rockfish a lot more. I usually catch and release salmon. My girlfriend wanted to eat this one.

I didnt end up going out today. Was a little too windy.

That's a darn nice fish Merz!  Gotta love those calm fall days with bays full of salmon.

So many areas I want to fish and so little time......

BTW: I usually just bonk salmon with my fist.  Saves me having to remember another item to bring along.  I've also found a cannonball weight gripped in a pair of pliers will make short work of a fish.

I really need to get a picture of you going UFC on a Salmon!

Nice fish Merz! Your cat doesn't seem very interested though.

Great report and nice fish.  Been seeing some nice coho in the ladder in my neck of the woods.  They look pretty tasty but we can't keep them out here.

BTW- I second the gill ripping technique.

Those native fish sure are pretty, nice one CBM. Where was Roy, he's been kind of quiet lately. Surprised he wasn't out there with ya.
