I'm inspired.  That was super cool.  Was there much trial and error setting up the rig or did things go right on the first try?

I was kinda lucky - it was my first try.  I think I'll move the camera down the line a bit, maybe 2 or 3 feet.  Otherwise, it worked pretty well.  I gotta credit Pixster, his crab video was inspirational!

Cool video! Makes me want to run around the Columbia with my FF plunkin' everywhere to see what the structure really looks like.

Thanks again.

I don't know if such an award exists .... but you have my vote for
Post of the Year

I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

That is awesome!!!  Great job!  I always thought lings were in rocks and such!!!

Lings at 40ft?  Sweet!  I was experimenting with my gopro in a similar fashion. Not sure if I posted since it wasn't from a yak.

I had it set up so I could attach after I had the fish on or you can leave it on. Like you found out, hard to set the hook with the drag and weight of the gopro. Probably will use a circle hook when I try for butts next year.

Of course the one ling I had on, the camera wasn't on. I think the deepest footage was about 90 ft. Water was clear but at that depth you start losing the light. What I found interesting was the noise. I wonder if it's that loud for a fish. Next year I want video a halibut. Hope I don't lose the camera!!! Lol.

Very cool stuff guys. Now you've got me wondering what will be next? How far can we push it and not loose our camera's? we could almost mount these within a couple feet of our bait.. a pretty expensive toy to loose though... eitherway, cool vid's guy's

I didn't feel a whole lot of danger that I'd lose my camera.  I was pretty confident that I'd break off my gear in the event of a snag...which did happen a couple of times.   In fact, I might even go a bit heavier on my "safety" line.  I broke off during a hookset with 25lb.  Might try 30.

but if I lost it...what does spot say?  I can't remember exactly, but it's something to the effect of, you take risks for good times.

k84 - I liked your footage.  Any time you can see what's going on down there is a bonus!  I loved the closeups of the quillback who had taken the vortex jig.  I really like those williamson jigs.

I used 65 lbs spectra mainline and lightened my leader to 20 pounds to make sure that my leader broke first to save the camera.

here's the set up I used.  I bought a surfboard mount, cut it down, attached clips and wrapped a rubber band around a sinker.

I can't remember if I posted this but here's an underwater shot using my Olympus 8010 stylus tough mounted onto a quickpod type handle... obviously not kayak fishing!  lol.  The biggest in the video was maybe 16 inches.  I caught bigger ones but the big ones just came flying through and hammered the jig so I didn't have time to get the camera down.  Once again, I wonder if its "that loud" for the fish.  If so, I can't believe they don't flinch or take off.  I LOVE sight fishing while ice fishing.  Better than the world's best video game to me!

Nice job Rory. There was one spot where you set the hook and I was like, aaahhhh shit. I thought you had lost the camera.

Awesome videos!  It is really cool to see how you guys rigged up your cameras to get them down to the action.

Here's one I did over the weekend.  A straight ripoff of Pixster's...and his vid was way, way better.  But it was fun to do.  Here's the video notes:

Attached my gopro camera a few feet above a crab trap over the weekend. Sped it up in the editor and condensed 3h40m down to 4 minutes.

Interesting to watch because it exposes my newbie error. The bait bag was too close to the side and top, allowing the crabs to dine without having to go inside the trap. As a result, there were no keepers in this trap. Luckily, there were in others!

It's also interesting to see the flatfish hovering around the edges, hoping for some scraps! The "shaking" is actually the swaying of the line in the current. The current changes direction about 3/4 of the way through.

The area, like most in the Puget Sound, is being pillaged by commerical crabbers. So, what over the summer would have been close to full traps at this spot (after 4 hours) yielded maybe a quarter of the crabs. Makes it really, really hard to limit. But, I guess people need jobs. Or whatever.

Cool video Rory! Thats a LOT of flatfish looking for a nibble. Looks like you can catch crab and chum for flatfish at the same time!!

AWESOME!  That is too cool.  Crabs look like they come in from down current which makes sense.  Seems like if you could get the trap to somehow fall with the doors on the down current side, you might have had a chance for a few more.  Also it seems like you might get an extra crab or two if you can place the bait so they can't access it from the top like you said.  How would you know that without seeing it on video!

Great stuff!!!   Keep them coming!  Do you mind if I share this??  People are going to love it!
