HAD A GREAT DAY! Crabbing was poor but the weather cooperated!  Below are some pictures of Sinker trying out the Outback.  Sort of an unorthodox approach but entertaining...

Actually, he was trying to make the Outback flip.  Notice in one of the pictures he is forcefully digging in with the paddle to try and force the roll. I didn't get to see what he did to flip it but you can see him swimming in the background behind Ndogg and Craig.

It was a blast out there with all you guys today.  Thanks again for the ride and good conversation Stevehawk.

Although I only came home with three keepeers out of about 200 crabs pulled up,  I enjoyed every minute of it.  I had about 10 others that were within a millimeter of being legal :-\.  Ah well, they tasted great.  I will post some pictures  up tomorrow when I get a chance.

I'll get some photos up later. Awesome time! Thanks Nate for putting it together. Let's do it again next week.

Did anyone finds orange rescue paddle?

See you tonight at Next Adventure.

I'm down for a replay.

Next week will probably be my only chance to rent the revo before mid-jan.

I would much rather be up a creek without a paddle than down one.

Hey Sinker...

How did you manage to flip the outback?  Haven't done that yet.  I have flipped my mini-x once when I first started.   When I tried to reflip my mini-x I couldn't.  I found out after a few minutes in the water the blade of my paddle was tightly wedged into my handles.  100% NOOB operator error in cold Alaska waters.  ARGH!

Next summer at the end of the day, I want to try and surf the outback and mini-x a bit to get more comfortable with surf landings.

I pretty much had to hold one handle and lean out over the water pulling it over with me.

In the pic Stevehawk took I was bracing on the water trying to figure out how far I could tip it up before I could not hold it any more.  I could not tip it that way.

I actually had to pull it over with me, otherwise I would just fall out and it would stay upright.

        Sinker,
Hobie ought to pay you for those pictures and use 'em in their advertising.Pretty cool shots.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Sorry about the slow crabbing yesterday at least we were able to get a couple and the weather was much better than forecast.
Sinker you should post the results of your dry top and waders test.  I think most folks will find it interesting.

So basically what happened is when I flipped the kayak,  all the air in my waders and dry top had to go somewhere.  Because I did not have my pfd buckled up properly it pulled up on the dry top and the bubble went out around my waist.
What felt like an equal amount of cold seawater went in.

When I got out of the water my legs looked like they were vac-sealed in the waders.

After that I jumped in off the dock and moved around a bunch in the water and no more water got in.

So I guess the moral is - get the air out.

I am really glad I tried it though, because now I know.

And knowing is half the battle.

What, you can't predict crabbing outcome or weather forcast...what kind of a guide are you? No apologies needed Bro. It was a great time and that's coming from the only guy that got skunked for keepers. I caught over 100 and the score was very close between my crab ring and the Crabhawk. Just none of the big boys wanted to cooperate (certainly not your fault). Thanks for pulling the trip together and having a clue about where for us all to go....it was great!!

I think Sinker needs to change his handle to Floater! Gotta' say I was impressed at his willingness to test it out on a chilly day and drive home wet. Ah, youth...

All in all it was a really great time, hundreds of crabs caught, only a dozen or less kept.

I'm planning to go the Hillsboro class by Spot on December 1st. Since I've got to drive that far I'm hoping to head back to Nehalem for crabbing that morning and catch the class on the way home. Anyone else up for it?

I'm working on my photos and videos from our trip, hope to post them tomorrow. Need to clear out some hard drive space. Here's the one that I've saved so far.

If the monsoons continue you might want to consider Netarts. The rain causes salinity to drop and the spiders run back to the ocean. No river flows into Netarts so the water stays salty and theoretically more crabby.
