I've been looking to upgrade the aluminum shaft, plastic blade Sea-sense paddle that came with my boat (Saw online today for $18 at Wallymart) and came across this last night.

According to the Aqua-Bound paddle sizing criteria, this paddle meets all the criteria except that it recommends a longer paddle (240+) for boats 30" and wider (my Caper is 31").

Thoughts?

That is a killer deal for a 220 cm paddle, but it may be a bit small for what you need.

6' tall, 140 lbs soaking wet, and have a low angle paddle stroke.  My current paddle is 210 cm. and does seem a bit short.

A 240+ paddle was recommended because of the width of my boat, but because of the length (11') and lack of rudder system, could a 240+ paddle be too long?

I wonder if the price benefit would be valued higher than the lack of length cost....

I'm 6'1" and my Tarpon is also 30" long. I have a 230 and 240 paddle and prefer 230 for most paddling. I like the extra reach of the 240 if I'm really trying to move quickly, but for most paddling I find that the 230 is a better overall fit. If you're used to a 210 the 220 might work just fine for you.

I was going to offer to loan you mine to try out, but then I noticed you're from the other Vancouver. That's probably an even better price, since you're up in Canada. ;D I have a 220 Werner and a 230 Carlisle and am paddling an Ocean Kayak T-11 at 30.5" wide (might as well call it 31"). So far, I still don't track very straight, but I think it's just me, trying to establish a decent rythym or cadence. I also think I prefer the Werner, but due more to material and shape of the handle.

Thanks for the responses and the thought of a loaner.  Thats the info I was looking for.. Sometimes the abundance of info online only adds to making decisions more complicated.

That Vancouver thing has thrown me off a few times. Maybe George Vancouver thought that the geographical distance between the two, traveled by sailboat in 1792, was far enough that they wouldn't be confused, then again, maybe he just liked the sound of his own name...

I believe that 99% of people would work fine with a 230 on a SOT fishing kayak.  Going up or down from there is fine tuning.

In general, going longer results in having to pull harder, and going shorter results in having to reach more.  Longer or shorter may fit a particular persons style of paddle (high or low) angler better.  But again, going up or down from 230 is fine tuning.
