I am in!  I swore off fishing til February after losing that big trout, but my dealer just called and offered me a fix.  I am so addicted I can't say no.  Help me!

Couple quick questions.  I just don't want to get disqualified for my own ignorance.

1.  What if I'm out fishing and a boating friend in a PB drives up.  If we want to BS, share beer, brag, am I allowed to tie off to him and not have fish during the trip disqualified?  NO fish would be caught while tied together.

2.  If during the same day i catch a keeper sturgeon, say 46 inches and keep it, then a little later cach a 55 inch sturgeon, can i measure and count the larger fish even after I caught my keeper for the day?  The regs say you can keep fishing but you just can't keep.

any answers to these questions?

As long as you're just rafted up and he's not towing you in any way, it's all good.

The 46 incher is the one you'd enter.  You can NOT enter any fish that you wouldn't be allowed to keep.

Allen,
I see on the NCKA AOTY you have listed the top 5 places, and corresponding prize value.
So, out of curiosity what are the places and corresponding prize value per place in this years NWKA AOTY?
It may be known by some folks here, but there are many new newbies signing up that may not know.

Heck, I don't even know what they have been in the past.

Also,
Will there be any consolation prizes for largest fish per species this year?

I'm still working through what the prizes are for this year, but we have a good lot to choose from.

Ocean Kayak T13.
Humminbird 383
Wheeleez
Scotty package
Groundswell guided trip for 2
Hobie Prize package
Skoosh seat pad.
Yakattack flag post

I'm probably forgetting a prize or 3.  We'll have the final listing up shortly.

Congrats to everyone who competed this year and specifically to those battling it out for the top spot at the end.

I caught my first walleye ever this year.  One more species for the life list.  Probably wouldn't have happened without the AOTY contest.

Just a thought on prizes.

It looks like there are many and with more people participating in 2012 The number could go up (If site costs have remained constant).

I know everyone has the top spot as their ultimate goal.  But, having small prizes ( a few lures maybe) for the first person to  500, 1000 and 1500 points might provide some early excitement before the grand finale and increase the number of early sign ups.  And yes, I do think there will be more than one yaker going over 1500 with the new point adjustment.  ;)

Another idea would be the "Lunker prize" for the angler with the most species topping fish.  If someone couldn't be in the running for AOTY for whatever reason, with 3 or 4 top fish they would have a shot at this prize.  This might be a more difficult task than having the highest overall average of 10 fish that determines the AOTY winner and therefore an equally impressive representation of fishing prowess.

Here's what I committed at NCKA AOTY and I'll do the same here.

1st : a prize with a MSRP value of at least $1000
2nd: a prize with an MSRP value of at least $500
3rd: a prize with an MSRP value of at least $250
4th: a prize with an MSRP value of at least $100
5th: a prize with an MSRP value of at least $50

The top entry in each species will get a prize (TBD).

You can see from the 2011 prize list that we'll easily be able to meet the 1st through 5th prizes.  Here's a little more insight on how I go about prizes.  I usually wait a little bit of time to see how many people sign up because it helps me pitch the event better.  I'd like to have a really good idea by the end of January, so if you know you are going to sign up for 2012 AOTY, please try to do so by then.  It will really help in the prize gathering.

This year we are adding a prize for the top entry for each species.  Not sure what these will be yet, and they won't necessarily be huge.  But it's at least good for bragging rights!   Perhaps something like a small plaque saying something like "2012 NWKA AOTY biggest Pacific Staghorn Sculpin - INSAYN".

Funny you mentioned "Biggest Pacific Staghorn Scuplin".  When Bluewrx02 and I went to Newport to crab and fish the jettys this fall, he caught the biggest dang Staghorn I've ever seen.  It was big enough to throw down a NCKA Cabezon.  Ugly ugly fish!

The 2012 AOTY site is now active.  Pardon the banner still saying 2011.  That's the last thing that needs updating.

Hey Allen,

I think you mentioned it in this thread somewhere but how do we submit fish (on the off chance that I catch one this year)?

Yes, I've been wondering how long I will be able to maintain 5th place.
