Car ram rod???

Anyone use ram mounts? I just bought one of the easy release Rod holder mounts and it takes a bit of muscle to open and close it. What do you guys use for a backing so you don't rip the kayak apart? And where do you put it for easy access without obstructing the mirage drive. I have an outback and am thinking just forward of the handle on the stbd side....

I use HDPE cutting boards for backing... many of us around here do

I use 1/8" aluminum, hand formed to match to contour of the kayak. 
Makes a very solid mount.
