What do you like?

Great White or Chartreuse Flash for shad.

Clear Red and Motor Oil Christmas for bones.

Motor Oil Red for surf perch.

Does anyone know if shad go up the Lewis or washougal? I'm fairly new to kayak fishing but I've fished off a boat most of my life. I have a sit in fishing kayak and want to fish had but don't trust my sit in on the Columbia.

Of course shad are great bait for oversize sturgeon and crab--but they are also great bait for halibut. They are the largest member of the herring family and I have had days when they outfished everything else I tried.

+1 bankfishing at Bonneville I've had the sturgeon come right up and try to steal my shad stringers. I actually kept a half dozen for crabbing from last year. Might have to come down there and try out for some sturgeon.

I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

What is with fishing videos and head-banging music?!   That's sure as hell is not what's going through my mind when I fish.

Well, I am probably a couple generations to the right of the NWKA age bell curve.

In any case, it was an interesting video with the sound off.  The word "stately" comes to mind for me for sturgeon.

Are they edible?

They grow a bit bigger on the East Coast where I grew up.  My grandmother used to slow bake them along with their roe and they were DELICIOUS.  A  "shad bake" was a celebrated feast in North Carolina for generations.  I plan on being down there this year, in my kayak if I've learned enough to be confident in it by then.

Could you please post a good southern recipe when you get back? :) I'm down for trying new foods.

Clackamette park on the Willamette is a good spot to launch/fish for em. Current isn't too bad come June there as long as there's not a big runoff happening at the time. If they're in, it won't a problem filling up a tank well/cooler/stringer/whatever.  I like using dick nites (smallest size), or micro curly tail grubs, chartreuse and/or pink are usually good bets
Looks like an easy launch. Which way do you go after?
