Hey there, just came across this website looking for info on kayak fishing in or around Port Angeles. I just recently moved up here for Puerto Rico so have a lot to learn about the area. Any one on here fish the area? I see a lot of Seattle folks on here. Is the fishing better out that way? I see Halibut season is coming up and want to start gearing up for that. Never caught one. If anyone is going out and don't mind some company give me a shout! Thanks Lock

You are in an awesome location for Kayak fishing. The entire straights have great bottom fish and salmon fishing. First things first figure out what type of boat you are interested in and test drive a few. Use the search function, if you have a question there is a good chance someone else has had the same question and lots of good info has already been posted. Mark your calender for June 16th for the ORC, it is our biggest even of the year.

Hi Lock,

I live here & fish her a lot.  Can show you the spots I fish and help you with fishing gear picks.  Blackmouth, (King Salmon) is open right now and the guys were doing pretty good Monday.  I may be out this Saturday if you are interested let me know.  I have an extra boat and gear but it may be taken Sat.

Hey, yeah no fishing on the Strait Saturday, when I was thinking of the forecast was good.  I use a Planer/Diver, flasher and spoon combo for Salmon, Should be a post in Fishing reports from Oct 2011 and Jigs for Salmon mostly.  Sometimes Other stuff works and Mooching with Herring is a go to method.  If you do a search here or google you can find many of the common setups used here.  Chartruese/Green, and whatever imitates local baits are my favorites.  So Herring looking Jigs are at the top of my list.  These work well for Rockfish and other Bottomfish too but are it bit spendy when you lose them.

Hopeing to get out there again soon.  May it before work this week.  Let me know if you can do weekdays.

Bryan

I'm looking for a little window of opportunity to get out, went out for a bit last week but it wasn't a good day, tides were unfavorable and all I did was lose gear.  This week is looking better but I'm a little busy.  I like to fish around the tide changes and try to time my fishing to take advantage of the currents as opposed to fighting them.  If you look at the tidal exchange, you may know this, you will get an idea of the intensity of the current and what you are dealing with.  Fishing around freshwater bay/ Crescent Bay you can always find a way way out but you might have to get a pickup or wait out a strong tide if you get caught in a nasty situation.  I paddled to the point of exhaustion once, and nearly another time.  Haven't been stuck yet & there is cell coverage so I could call my wife to pick me up.  We could park a vehicle at Salt Creek/Crescent Bay and one at Freshwater too sometime and mostly drift.

Anyhow giving some thought to Weds AM this week, if the weather cooperates.  Let me know if you can do it.  Swains is a great resource, most of those guys have some good intel on what is happening.  Bob Auspauch is the the best but he is busy, he loves to talk fishing though.

Hope to hook up soon ; )

Yea defiantly gotta start looking at the weather and tides here unlike down in Puerto Rico where the tide change was very minimal. Thats where I first started fishing out of the yak. Anyways I work all week so next chance will be this coming weekend.
