I felt like sniffing around close to home so I hit the Willy this morning see how things were around the bridges.   I cruised upriver first to get a look at how the new bridge is coming along.  There were about three boats trolling for springers so I chatted with a couple of them.  Fish are being caught, but it's pretty slow apparently.

I went down river to the Hawthorne Bridge to find a spot to anchor up and see if I could harass some sturgeon.  I anchored in a few locations and wasn't getting any bites for the first hour or two.  The last spot I anchored in I finally found a couple of fish - just a couple of shakers though.

It was a beautiful sunny morning so I'm glad I got on the water.

Don't forget 36" shakers count in kayak wars.  The one in the pic looks 36+.

I didn't get a pic of it next to a measuring device because the little bastard just didn't want to hold still.  Do you think they'll care that there isn't a measurement reference in the pic?  I was thinking about submitting it, just didn't want to get crap for it.

I'd submit it.  They make exceptions for larger fish that are hard to measure.  I couldn't measure the 2 shakers I caught without stressing them so I just took a quick pic.

Way to get out there!

The kayak wars sturgeon measure/picture thing is a tough nut. I had a bunch of shakers during the retention season and tried to take a pic of a couple then said the hell with it.  The problem I ran into was "A" getting them to cooperate and lay flat on the hawg trough (impossible single handed) and "B" being able to get a shot of the fish that actually shows something submittable.  In order to get the whole fish in the frame and see the measurements a guy would almost have to stand up.  Theres no way I'm dropping off anchor and going ashore to measure every fish. Maybe its a two man deal?  One wrangles the fish and the other takes the pic?

Funny thing about sturgeon. I found if I laid them across the gunnels that they stayed calmer and straighter. You all might want to try this in the future. I think the support at just two points makes them calm.

That would be my best guess for a solution.

Way to explore our nice urban fishery.  I agree that for bigger fish a two man deal is necessary for CR.

Do they not stay calm if you turn them upside down?

They do stay calm upside down if you leave them floating in the water. A little hard to measure that way though with one person. I know its a hassle, but a sandy beach nearby may be your only choice. Especially if it's a decent sized fish.

If you have a video that shows the tape can that be used? I know Kayak Wars mentioned needing meta data on photos submitted. If you pull a screen shot from a video that probably gets lost.

It does get lost from the GoPros.  But if you snapped a normal shot with a camera then used the video and submitted both they will probably take it.
