Murf, are there halibut on the east side of Whidbey, or do you have to venture off the west side to find them?

I might be interested in trying to fish them (or lings) this spring.

I can honestly tell you that i have no idea if there are Halibut on the east side of the island.  I have never tried to fish for Hali on the east side.  Come to think of it I've never heard of anyone fishing the east side for Halibut so I would probably use that as an indicator.  The season is usually so short I can only hit my favorite spots and a few others.  I'll tell you what, If you are looking for places to fish, go pick up a copy of "Saltwater Fishing Journal"  I have used this for about two years now and it has yet to fail me.  As an added bonus, if you go up to John's Sporting Goods in Everett, you can talk to the author and really pick his brain about some of your favorite spots.  The best thing about the entire book are the waypoints.  Rarely will you meet an angler so willing to give out his best spots but I have first hand expirience that these spots produce.  Just load them to your SD card, transfer them to your FF, and your off.

Weather permitting I plan on launching near Greenbank on Sunday for a good day of salmon fishing.  If anybody is in the area let me know and we can meet up and start slaying them out there.  Let it be known that while 3 inches of snow was falling on the mainland, the island was enjoying partly sunny calm wind weekend.  Crossing fingers for another good weather weekend. :)

Does anybody know how to fix a fish finder?  The only reason I ask is because after spending more than a 7 hours on the water I never once marked a fish, I marked a few bait balls and more than a few mammals but never marked a fish.  I encountered more than my fair share of seals and even came pretty close to a Grey Whale.  So I don't think area 8 is going to be all that great for a while, once the whales have left the area I expect the fish will move back in.  Or my fish finder is actually broken then I have some work to do.

^ Murf I had the same exact issue with my new Elite 4 on Sat. I couldn't tell if I was marking fish or what, the "archs" in simulation mode were waaaay more defined than the blobs i was marking. Maybe this deserves a separate thread as I know at least one more person besides the two of us has had this issue recently.

Grey whales are filter feeders, scooping up mud from the bottom and straining it for goodies.  I don't think they are a threat to the fish you are targeting.

On my Humminbird, I rarely get good fish arches.  A perfect fish arch only occurs when the relative motion of the fish and you cause the fish to move through the center of the sound cone at sufficient speed.  If you and fish are both drifting with the current and your relative motion is low they will form a line on the fishfinder.  If they just intersect a bit of the sound cone they may just be a weak, short blob.

I did a little research on what the Grey's feed on and your right demonik(not that you'd be wrong) but i was just thinking that if they are feeding on the bottom or in an area where salmon are supposed to be, the salmon would just pick up and leave the area while the whale stir up everything and screw up their place.

You could be right.  I've flown over the coast in spring and seen the migrating Gray Whales feeding.  They do leave a muddy mess in the immediate area they are feeding.

BTW - once they cross into Canadian waters they become Grey Whales.

Murf I hear ya...I can't read diddly squat on my fish finder without track mode on, but with it on I mark fish all over the place....I've given up on using it for its "fish finding " capabilities and mostly just use it to read depth, structure , and water temp...with those three I can usually always catch fish
