Anybody heading out this weekend for some clamming?

I plan on dropping a crab pot @ Westport around 5am and then hitting Twin Harbors beach for clamming.  After I limit, I will be going back to Westport to finish getting my crabs for the day and throwing some jigs around to see if any bass are in yet.

I have room if somebody wants to go with.  Leaving Olympia around 4-4:30am.

OlySpec, sounds like you have a plan!
Some things to consider: it takes a good hour, maybe a little longer (depending where in the area you live), to get here from Oly. Ocean and weather conditions forecasts don't look too yakfishin' friendly here this weekend, although the Harbor side of the Jetty is somewhat protected from southerly winds. Also, the outside of the breakwater surrounding the boat basin might be pretty calm all the way around to where the finger jetties begin, west of the Harbor Resort. There is a high wall of pilings incorporated into that breakwater, and it blocks the southerly winds.
According to the forecast, there will be some surf, possibly large and gnarly breaking in front of those finger jetties. Its a surf spot known as "The Groynes" (We always spelled it "the groins," but the faint hearted old ladies around here prefer the British spelling, for some reason ::)). If you are set in your plans, then good luck with the weather and ocean conditions.  As long as it isn't raining, it should be decent clamming.

I'd be tempted to join you yak fishin' if the weather was more to my liking.  At my age, I no longer ignore the gnarly conditions, but prefer the "user friendly" moods of the ocean. I am hoping for fair weather and favorable winds for the Ling opener on the 17th.

I might not go clamming.  For me, it gets more difficult to see the clam shows when there is a film of standing water (from rain) on the beach.  If it has just stopped raining, though, I'll head out and look for some higher spots on the beach topography that drain quicker, and where it might be easier to spot the shows. I usually dig somewhere on a beach south of Twin Harbors St Pk, not far from a beach access in Grayland.

I'm no longer a razor clam fanatic. I only like to dig for one meal, and then not eat 'em again for at least a couple of weeks. So I now just dig about a half dozen. I can go dig those in ten minutes if they're showing, and then I get to go do something else thats more interesting and more fun. So I always prefer to dig alone, so that I don't have to wait for someone else to get their limit.

It is still early in the year, and although the Ling season opens on the 17th, I'm in no hurry. Since I live here  and am self-employed, I am able to alter my schedule and plans easily enough, so I wait for the conditions to be to my liking before I head out. Ling season is usually open through October out here on the coast.

Thanks a ton for the reply.  I do not plan on yakking tomorrow, just hitting the pier and the beach.  I have missed the last two digs, and I need to stock up on clam necks for the derby coming up.  Also, my GF is fiend'ing for some chowder.  Come to think of it, I am excited to get some for my panko friend clams.  I got hooked on these things last year and cannot get enough of them.

Yummy!  Gawd I wish I lived on the coast near a good razor clam area.  Those are by far my favorite clam.
