I LOVE the folbe rod holders. Does anyone else use them?
[/quote]

I thought about it. Couldn't justify the 44 bucks plus the 14 for the extenders plus 15 on top of that for flush mounts when I had 3 Scotty holders and flush mounts off my last boat just sitting in my garage.
Looks like a cool idea tho!
I have a feeling now that I'm yaking hands free in my new Outback I'll probably end up holding my rod in my hand most of the time when trolling anyway.
If you get one let me know what you think. :)

Ive used them before in a guide boat. They are awesome. I always wondered what they were called. Then Kardnal suggested the folbes rod holders in a post, so I googled them and lo and behold there were those rod holders I thought were so great!

PDX, you are the Dino King! You gotta give me lessons on this. I'm hoping to hit the Columbia out of Camas later this week, give me some pointers!

PDX ram mounts are awesome if you're not transporting your yak upside down on they our roof racks. Flush mounts are easier for loading and unloading. Plus there are a million and a half adapters for Scotty mounts above and beyond using them for rod holders.
I'm planning on installing a ram mount in one of my side trays, possibly on one of those new rail mounts. Because its in the tray cavity it shouldn't interfere with loading and unloading.

The flush mount was a factor in my decision even though I just throw my kayak in the bed of my truck. I was more concerned with them getting in the way during storage. In the end I think I was overly conservative and ram mounts would have been fine. Just look at Rawkfish's set up. It clearly takes a lot of balls to win AOTY :)

I hold my fishing rod most of the time when sturgeon fishing. I only use the holders when warming up or eating.  I use the holders for parallel rod storage while bass fishing and when fishing 2 rods in a lake. My only concern with the Scottie's is that if I Huli in the surf they could fall out if the yak was upside down and they were twisting around.

 ;)

I've been able to troll for salmon with over 8 oz. of lead with my RAM Revolution mount and it stays put nicely.  Once I figured out a couple of tricks about how to use them, I've never had a problem getting my RAM rod holders to stay where they need to.

I am not sure there is much to teach. I only follow a couple of rules. If you are not getting bit then move. Keep your line in the water. I do not think that the type of bait usually matters very much (do not waste time re-baiting, keep your line in the water). Every 5 minutes or so I pick up my rod enough to move my sinker, you never know when your bait is under a rock. That is about it. I like to fish deep water near dropoffs - places where debris and food might collect. While I am fishing I keep my reel in free spool with my thumb on the spool with just enough pressure to keep the current from pulling out line. I wait to set the hook until they are pulling the line out pretty good. I use circle hooks so at that point I just start reeling.

As for the big C, I have not fished it yet in my kayak. I did read that there are a lot of sturgeon in shallow water right now (do a search on ifish for sturgeon snagging and poaching). This time of year it seems that sturgeon on the big C head to shallow water to feed on clams. This behavior caused the closure of the slough upstream from rooster rock a few years ago - shooting fish in a barrel.

But the most important thing is too make sure you are lucky :)

Thanks, where do I buy that "lucky" stuff? I always liked the saying "the harder I work the luckier I get".

Looks like a fun day!  You definitely got more fish than you would have Salmon fishing.

My one suggestion: mix it up a little.  There are so many good sturgeon holes between OC and Saint Helens.  You've got GR wired, now find some new honey holes.  :D

You are right Spot. I have been pretty lazy about exploring new spots. I have been waiting for the water to warm a bit so I can do joint smallmouth/sturgeon exploration. Part of my laziness is that I have not been skunked yet in my kayak. It is hard to risk the streak :)

Don't worry, the skunk smell washes off.  I may try the Columbia again for sturgeon one of these days.  I have a spot up river I want to try.

To be clear I have been skunked from the bank on lakes, rivers and oceans, from boats and canoes. I know I need to add stripe to my outback one of these days, but it has been the best skunk less run of my life!  Hard to give that up, however, spot is right and I know in the end the growth of exploration greatly out weighs the occasional skunking. It will be a bit of a relief the first time I blank.

Craig, please let me know when you hit the big C. I am getting psyched about new waters.

I'm dying to get my new Outback out for sturgeon. PDX your catch isn't helping ease my desire. :)

I'm up for a Big C sturgeon or springers from Chinook to Powerlines, Ackerman or Lady Islands. I'll launch from Camas and meet you there. How about Thursday or Friday when Dinos are keepers?

You guys would probably do better for Springers lower on the River. I'd head for the Caterpillar Island area. I think there is a boat ramp on the WA side. I might even be able to meet you guys if you go Friday afternoon. H, when are you going to start throwing up some Kayak Wars points?!
