Oh mann... I was hoping to do some surf launching practice at PC after clamming this Saturday, but looks like just clamming because of surf condition. So far my Revo has only been on Battle Ground lake and Columbia river. I am still feeling very intimidated by ocean surf. I can feel the adrenaline pumping already thinking about surf launching and landing.  Would you guys let me know on the next opportunity to do some bottom fishing? Thanks in advance. Take care.

No reason not to do it.  Strip your yak down and head out there with a paddle only and get tossed around on the inside broken waves.  You'll get a good feel for things, and have a good time!

I would tend to agree with Rawkfish on this one.  Even though I've only taken my kayak in the ocean once, I've been bobbing in the ocean for 15 years as a surfer and scanning the forecasts and seeing actual conditions during that time.  Swells can arrive early and you wouldn't want to be stuck outside as a 9ft swell arrives, unless you're experienced in getting to the beach in those conditions.  Also, the offshore winds can pick up quickly and this may make it challenging to paddle back to shore (although I've yet to test this theory).  I'll be tracking the conditions very closely up to Saturday.  Remember, magic seaweed is much less accurate than NOAA.  One of the better ways to forecast incoming swell is to look at the buoy readings.  Another good site is stormsurf.com, but remember to add the wind wave height to the swell height to get a good idea of the bigger waves.  I hope to meet up on Saturday, but I won't be there if I'm not comfortable with the conditions.

I appreciate the heads up from those of you with salt experience. I'm itching to get out in the salt and do some fishing but will heed your warning about PC and redirect my attention to Depoe Bay for this Saturday.
Craig and Antoine (Yakidyak) if you guys can fish Saturday and want to head to Depoe Bay I'm all about it. Does anyone else want to go? It would be nice to form a group.

I want to get out there, but due to health issues, I don't know if I can.  I will know more tomorrow.  It may just be a cnr sturgeon weekend for me if I try anything.  :'(

Hey Paul, let's plan a Depoe bottom fishing expedition. I am unfamiliar with Depoe Bay fishing. Should we launch early at outgoing tide?  Like Paul said...let's form a group that way we can keep each other safe. Any tips from the pro's are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would really like to make Depoe Bay but cannot (I have dinner date), but I am up for a trip to the Tillamook area either meeting someone or carpooling. I have not fished the salt in my Hobie Outback but would jump at the chance, especially with someone who is willing to share their knowledge.

If you guys fish depoe please make sure you head out with someone that has a decent amount of time in the salt. There will be plenty of future chances to get out and there are still plenty of things that can still to wrong without a surf launch. Be careful.

In addition, for those newbies (or anyone for that matter) thinking of heading out of Depoe make sure to brush up on the correct protocol for entering and leaving the harbor  (VHF and Air horn).   Please take time to learn the correct steps and represent the kayak community well to those who may be critical of our presence there.

Fly a safety flag.

Call your exit/entry to the harbor channel on VHF 80.

eg, "Depoe Bay Depoe Bay, 2 kayaks outbound outbound."

You may get a response from the CG, Tradewinds Charters, or no response at all.

It's smart to send no more than 2 at a time through the channel. In case you meet a PB you can hug the walls and get out of the way.

Protocol dictates a blast of your horn before entry or exit of the harbor.

There is no way I'm heading anywhere near the ocean without an experienced guide to show me the ropes. I've got a little girl to think about. If it doesn't happen this weekend I'm sure there will be other opportunities. I'll just have to get my fishin fix in locally with some sturgeon or trout on local lakes. :)
Btw, thanks to all of you sharing info with us newbies and helping draw from some of your knowledge. You guys rock.

I provided an update on that thread I posted a link to, but I'll post it here too.  Here's a brochure from the OSMB on Depoe Bay.  It gives a nice map of the bay and shows where the hazards are.
