New to the sport and trying to figure out this forum stuff. Just purchased a kayak and waiting for the weather to improve before I try her out. Looking forward to meeting people and pulling a few fish in together. I live in Fortuna Ca. and will be fishing this summer. Drop me a line if your willing to show me the ropes. Thanks Chuck.

Welcome Shellback. Used to live in Alton, worked at Redwood Bootery in Fortuna and pulled greenchain in Carlotta back in the 70's. Loved the area. Look up AbKing(Eric from Loleta) to get you pointed in the right direction. He's also on the NCKA site. Trinidad may be good for the salt and the Eel for Steelies. Best of luck.

Howdy Howdy, Fortuna!  Loleta here.   ;D  NWKA rocks, and you may want to check out NCKA too.  Check those links that PNW put up - they will take you where you can learn about and sign up for my tournament for the rockfish/lingcod opener down at Shelter Cove on May 12th.  Registration closes in less than 2 weeks, so check it out.  It's a good event for a beginner as there are loads of people (should go over 100 easy) and every one of them will help you.  We're going to catch some serious salmon this year.  On NCKA I'm "LoletaEric", so I shouldn't be too hard to find.  Welcome to the Madness that is known as Kayakfishing.   :)
See you at Gimme Shelter

I was born in Fortuna CA, but I always thought it was a place my parents made up to hide the fact that I was a milk carton child....good to know it really exists!  :o Welcome :)

Fortuna was a great place back in the 70's to early 80's. I worked there as a shoe dog after escaping the big city of LA. Lived in a duplex in Alton(less than 300 people)and could walk to the mouth of the Van Duzen River/Eel River and salmon/steelie fish before and after work. Tons of fish back in those days. Smoker was getting constant workout. My duplex had 4' of water in it back in the floods of Dec '64 and the mud marks were still evident in the garage. Amazing what a long Pineapple express can do after a heavy snowpack. Checkout the highwater mark in Weott along the Avenue of the redwoods. totally mindblowing. During Rodeo Week the city would shut down main street(Fortuna) and have crazy events and a drunken street dance. Wonder what it's like today?
