I'm a skinny water fisherman from south Tx and we're heading to Wa and Or in June. Bringing my hobie and am wondering if I could get help with bay fishing. I'm not big on surf(no experience) but am game to try anything, long as it's not too deadly. Will my Tx lite tackle work for me or am I gonna be spending the big bucks, not much left after the gas for the trip. We'll be RVing so if there is fishing close to a place to stay it would help. I have a lot of shallow salt water time where it's been warm, so guess I need to know about your cold water. I have used waders to stay warm in the winter but thats when the water gets to 50. Any info about yakking , camping or just meeting folks would be appreciated, Art

Welcome Art.

Do you know where you will be staying on your trip up?

What tackle range do you plan on bringing? [ line weight, rod capacity etc]

Plan on any saltwater at all or freshwater only? There are some really nice bay/estuaries in ORE. that kind of remind me of Laguna Madre and the Rockport to South Padre area.

The answers to those questions can help us point you in the right direction.

I Haven't planned a stopping or staying place as it kind of depends on the fishing, I'll do salt water by choice.I'll be starting at the Rouge and go north from there at least as far as Westport. Then the Sound some. I have all summer if I'm lucky, and this will probably be my last chance to fish ya'lls water. I only have the 7 footers, spinning with an assortment of Penn from 430's to 4500's usually strung up with 12 to 15 lb. I'm open to9and looking at several rod reel combos for sale that seem to be what I'm seeing on the videos. won't have a lot of use for it on the bays here, But I guess if they're for sale I could also get rid of it later. would also like to try some crabbing I guess. I spose it sounds like I'm trying to cram a lot in I'm getting older and need to get the list checked off.

Nothing wrong with working your "bucket list"

Give the membership here a bit of time to digest what you've given us. I'm sure you will get a lot of good answers in return.

Welcome. I've got some crab gear, if you make it to the South Sound. We can try for some Red Rock crabs and we might get lucky with some dungees. Your light tackle will be good for jigging for some flounder and greenlings (depending on location) in the sound while crabbing.

You might consider ORC in June. It's in the salt but there is no surf launch. Tackle wise I could lend you a spare pole

Where's ORC? The pole offer is very generous as it always seemed that it would be easier to borrow a guys wife or girl friend than one of his fishing poles. I guess you're saying that my stuff wouldn't work in the big water.

The ORC ( Oregon rock fish classic)  is in Depoe Bay Oregon. Just north of Newport.

Sunset Bay here in Coos Bay OR is a great place to gain salt experience and there is a state and a county campgrouind within spitting distance...It is a beach launch but it is NOT a surf launch. If you did come here and i am around i would gladly show you around. A neo./breath.  chestwader paired with a dry/splash top would be ok and of course a PFD..I have a splash top you could use if you have the waders...

A cheapo level wind or conventional reel on a medium heavy ugly stik is a good choice.A decent sized spinning reel will work but  a conventional is  Nice to have just in case you hook a big one. Lot more cranking power. I always have a spinning setup also for casting in to the rocks or for topwater blacks.

What Hobie do you have?
See ya on the water..

If you are into trout fishing, there would be many possibilities all over. The Oregon coast has many lakes. The upper tidewater parts of most of the bays also have searun cutthroat trout and it's pretty safe.

Coos bay sounds like the spot to start, just from whst I've seen here and from the state tourist folks. I run the small sport hobie, got a helluva deal on it as I've always used paddle boats, I also use a 14.5 Native when my wife wants to paddle. I was always afraid of the Mirage sticking down when fishing Reds in skinny water and I have had more than one occasion where I wished I had pulled the drive before I fished. Lost some nice fish to the fins, not so bad in Louisiana as I have more water where I fish there. You've answered a lot of my questions. I see one launch point at Sunset Bay State park on my launch point app. Looks pretty easy according to my charts, do you fish fairly close then? I will get a rig to use up there. Can I get my license and boat permits on line? what about termional tackle anything special or should I plan on rigging from your local shops? lots of questions I guess but I'm sure ya'll would have some for me if you were coming to our skinny water.

If you are heading up the coast in Oregon there are several bays to crab, Netarts, Tillamook, and Nehalem. I have extra rings that you can borrow.  When do you think you will be driving through?

Leaving Tx around 20 May for about a 6 or 7 day trip to Or, looks like maybe coos bay for a few if the wx is decent then on up the coast.  We have a square dance over in Spokane on the 23d of Jun so it will be all tourist til then. Then on to Id and Mt for a few weeks of dancing, then home again. I'd like to get in as much time on the water as I can while WE're there.
