I finally got a chance to try my Outback in the salt yesterday. Anthony (Ling Banger), Langston (Langcod), Antoine. (Yakidyak) and I launched from the DB boat launch around 8 am. Swells and wind varied throughout the day but thankfully the weather cooperated.
I would just like to say that kayak fishing in the ocean is AWESOME. There is nothing like it. I learned alot about safety such as the importance and proper use of a VHF radio and some basics about how the tide/swells behave.
We caught a ton of lings. Not sure how Langston did as he fished way south of us but Antoine, Anthony and I all limited on Lings with Anthony and Antoine catching a Cab each. Anthony also caught a bunch of rockfish.
After hooking into a huge Ling, my 30 lb braided line on my main setup cinched back on itself with a fish on and snapped my line. The line was so tangled there was no salvaging the spool. So on to my backup rod a medium/heavy 7 foot one piece lamiglas rod with 15lb braid. (btw I'm never fishing this light for lings in the future, lesson learned)
First hookup on this setup and I'm into a monster.  First time in the salt and I get a free sleigh ride. :)
I couldn't horse the fish up due to my light setup and after just shy of 2 hours fighting him he felt like he was just under my boat. With whatever energy he had left, once he saw my boat he dove hard one last time and snapped my one piece rod in half. Gone. I still don't know what type of fish it was since I didn't get a look. It could have been a big salmon, monster ling, or a halibut. Even with a lost monster fish, broken rod, and almost 2 hour fight it was still a fantastic experience. No regrets.
It was very cool of Anthony to offer to take a couple newbies out into the salt and volunteer his time. It was an experience I wont soon forget and a great introduction to ocean fishing.

That sounds like a hell of an adventure!  Way to get out there and discover yakking on the salt.  I think you likely had a halibut on as a big ling or salmon would've eventually tired more easily than a finned piece of plywood.  You'll think of that fish for a long time.   :)
See you at Gimme Shelter

Paul,   that is sweet!  I had no idea about your sleigh ride or breaking your rod.  Talk about going out with a bang!
It was nice seeing and meeting you guys out there.  I bet you loved the stability of that outback out there.  Even with them big fish attached it must have been pretty stable.  A couple times on the adventure, I would get tipped a little when the fish would take off to the side.   It caught me off guard a little, but was easily recovered.
First time on the Salt for my 16 year boy as well!  When he hooked into the second ling he was shaking when he finally lip gripped him. It was some amazing excitement for him and I as well.  It kind of reminded me of the video of Ron catching that big king on his Adventure.  At least it looked like Ron was shaking.  ;)  I know I would have been.   My kiddo is a fishing natural.   It was great to finally get him out there.  Ocean conditions were great!  We showed up on the water a little later on, somewhere around 11:30.  (Missed some windy conditions I here. 8) )Would of been there earlier but we had to get together a few safety Items, to help insure a successful trip.
For whatever reason, ???  I could not catch a single black rocky, but my boy was catching them like no bodies business.  We were using medium sized big hammers and some medium sized plugs. Even when we were fishing side by side, he would hook into the blacks and I would hook into the lings.  I tried to figure out why but had no success with it.  Maybe it has something to do with how fast or slow the lure is dropping?  Maybe it was the slight differences in color of the lures? :-\  Funny thing is I have been on the salt now at least a half of a dozen times and still have yet to catch a Black.   :(
Thanks again for the use of your mesh catch bag Anthony.  That was very helpful.  I'll get it back to you at the next meet up or ORC.

Nice fish, pics and stories!

The salt is awesome indeed. I can't wait to do some fishing on the Oregon Coast later this year!

Thanks for coming out Antoine and Paul, that was a fantastic day, except for the gusty AM.

I'm thinking Paul's mystery fish was a big king, it gave him a number of good rides. His rod was too light to begin to give that fish a serious fight.

Couldn't find many big ones. Got a cab at 22", and all 6 legal lings I pulled were pretty dinky. The blacks have some growing to do too, they were all 14" and under. I came up 2 blacks short on my limit. They were all hiding in the kelp, and there's lots of it that hasn't popped yet, or broke off from winter storms. Lots of hang ups.

Hope you're having a good time at the Redwoods Langston, you need a PFD for your pooch so he can come out with you.
