For you Lowrance Mark and Elite series users, which base did you go with? I want to be able to remove my unit for surf launches and while transporting to protect it from the inevitable Murphy's..... The 'elite' mount looks cool but $100 seems like a bunch.

I just used the larger ram mount base for my Elite 4. Fairly cheap compared to the elite mount and works well.

Do you remember the model #? I've been researching online and can find a bunch for pirahnamax's etc, but not the Mark units

I havent received it yet but I got the micro ram mount for the mark/elite units. I ordered from cabelas. 30.00. I really wanted that elite mount too, but the price talked me out of it.

You can still use the standard RAM mount, and remove it for surf launches.  Get yourself an extra ram ball, and secure it inside your front hatch somewhere, then you can attach it inside your hull for launch and return on saltwater outings.

I'll have to look at that one. Is it a ball mount?

Great idea on securing it! I was thinking a small dry bag with some foam insulation or similar.

Well, since the Mark 4 unit detaches from its own base, I just glued 'n screwed some cutting board to the available mounting spot in the front-center of my foot well, and then screwed my Mark 4 base to that. I can detach the unit from its base and put it in a small dry bag stashed/tied just inside my 8" hatch, if I need to take my yak thru the surf.
I decided that I didn't need to spend the money on a mount right now and didn't order one.. However, I might eventually get that $30 Ram micro-mount designed for the Mark 4 units, and install that base on my john boat. After that, I might add a ball to a slide trax mounted plate, if I end up not liking my current mounting position.
I think having the unit mounted in the front-center of the foot well offers more protection for it from the elements than having it mounted on the outer rail, though.

+1 on the above. However, I am in the process of getting my Lowrance Mark 4 DSI mounted to a crossbar I am installing across the middle of my Oasis. It will be in the middle athwartship - hopefully clear of my feet. I can just reach the controls from my seat. I will be mounting the transducer off of the same crossbar, and have further plans to use the crossbar for some outriggers.

I got to test out the ram micro mount. . I mounted it down in the cup holder. So when I detach the FF nothing is sticking past the rail. Also Even when mounted it doesn't stick up that far. Doesn't give much room for adjustment though but thats fine it adjusts to a perfect viewing angle. Ill post some pics up soon of the whole Kayak and how I have it rigged.
