I tried to install the turbo fins on my Mirage Drive yesterday, but discovered I could not break the seal on the shaft holding the standard fin in place.  The instructions tell me that it could be tough to break because they've used Lock-Tight on it. But when I follow their suggestion to use the drive itself while turning the shaft to give it extra torque, that's not breaking the seal for me.  I tried spraying the connection in some solvent and leaving it overnight, but that didn't seem to help.  A trip to the Google finds suggestion from nail polish remover to heat...

I'm so wary of breaking the darn drive that before I try something else, I thought I'd submit the dilemma to the esteemed faculty of the College of Northwest Kayak Anglers.  Any suggestions?

First, tap the end of the shaft with a hammer.  Then, brute Force.

The easiest way to apply brute force is by clamping the shaft in a table mounted C clamp, then turning the drive.

Not to imply that you may not be mechanically inclined, but figure I'd throw this out there just in case you are not familiar with:

"Righty tighty" = Clockwise
"Lefty Loosey" = Counter Clockwise

If you are already heading in the correct direction, then continue as previously instructed.
If not, change direction and see if it helps ya.

Not to scare you but, I couldn't get mine loose and decided to use brute force. I ended up breaking the glue seal around the brass collar in the gear socket. Had to order a new gear and have it repaired at Next adventure.  $50 price tag.  So, be very, very careful!

Heat. Not gas torch heat - heat gun type heat. Heat the rod above the socket. You don't want to heat the plastic parts of the drive, just the rod. Give it some time to spread down into the LocTite, then apply steady, heavy pressure. I like to use a large Crescent wrench.

Success!  It was the heat that did the trick -- and then some swearing for emphasis when applying all the brute force I could muster.  Didn't break anything, so that's good right?  Now I'm feeling ready to match myself against the currents of Cook Inlet.  Thanks for the tips and for bolstering my confidence, once again.

Way to go.  Don't forget to use the blue loctite when you put in the new masts.

It was definitely the swearing that helped the most.  Grandpa always said if it won't come loose, start swearing and it will.  Nothing to do with angry strength you muster.
