Thanks Rory. You ever fish Krocodiles or other spoons with a bit more length and flutter than the buzz bomb? I've talked to some guys who hit the sound hard for coho and actually think buzz bombs rate pretty low on the spectrum for triggering fish. You can sure cast them a long ways though.

Yes.  Works for me.  For anything other than pinks, I'd reach for a kroc or a kastmaster (you can cast these a long ways too!) before reaching for a buzz bomb.

My first kayak salmon was a coho caught as I was dragging a kastmaster. Somehow it has fallen out of my tackle repertoire since then. I should put it back, it's such a great all-around lure.

All surface. Keep your eyes peeled for surface action and when you see it, burn rubber to that location. Cast in front of where you think the fish will be, leading him by about 10 feet.

Sounds just like pink fishing.  Somehow I thought Coho was a trolling fishery.  Last year's pink run was a gas. 

In certain places, like along whidbey, they fish just like pinks. The coho run right along the beach on their way to the pass, heading toward the skagit river. This is why at peak coho season that beach will be lined with buzz bomb casters. There are already a few out now.

You talking east side, west side, or both sides of Whidbey?

Before I was a kayak angler I would cast buzz bombs off Bush Point, and caught pinks, and small kings.  Don't think I ever landed a coho. 

West side.  Fort Casey and Deception Pass beach are good spots for shallow-running, skagit-bound coho.

I've been told by some of the island locals that herring under a float is the way to go, that sometimes it can outfish everything else by 5:1 when the coho are finicky. I've seen guys fishing this way, but never tried it.

How exactly do you rig a herring under a float?

Assuming this is effective from the beach, do you think there is an alternative herring rig for kayak fishing that is just as effective when the coho are in tight and shallow? In other words, in these situations, best to beach the kayak and fish from shore with the herring/float? Or try some kind of slow-trolled, drifted herring rig from a kayak?
