My parents are considering coming out from the Midwest to stay at a place on Admiralty Cove on Whidbey Island in August. (The idea being their kids and spouses and first grandchild get to come along, too).

How is the kayaking in Admiralty? My parents are fairly experienced kayakers, but won't have dry suits. Is it pretty safe kayaking in that area if you stay somewhat close to shore?

Also, should there be some coho starting around then? Any tips for kayak or beach fishing at that time?

Thanks!

I cant speak as to what our northwest weather may have in store for there trip, but generally the weather and seas should be really good for kayak fishing Admiralty in August.  Plenty of Coho are there for the taking both from the beach and from a yak.  Use a orange/mirror spin and glow, three beads, lil corky surrounded by an orange hoochie skirt, 1 to 1/0 hook tipped with tiger prawn and you should have plenty of Coho for a shore lunch and more.

Thanks Murf. How much weight and how deep for trolling that set-up?

Also, what would you recommend for tossing from the beach?

Thanks...I know everybody seems to throw buzz bombs from shore, just curious if there was anything else (including the set-up Murf mentioned). That set-up sounds somewhat similar to the Bush Point special folks throw off the beach for steelhead, so I wondered if it was also worthy of casting.

I've done ok throwing buzz bombs for pinks, but have yet to hook a nice coho with one.

The setup works for both pinks and silvers,  the great thing is you will have a much better shot at hooking the silvers from your yak than the anglers on the beach.  The bigger silvers tend to stay just out of reach of anglers on the beach.  Twice the distance of a long cast is generally where i make my drifts and trolls along the beach.

Thanks Murf. How much weight and how deep you try to fish with that set-up?

Is tiger prawn just the uncooked shrimp you can get from the grocery store? Just throw a chunk of it on that set-up?

Any other tips for kayak fishing for coho off Whidbey in late August? I'm getting excited...

They likely to be up near the surface, or should I be prepared to fish down a ways?

All surface. Keep your eyes peeled for surface action and when you see it, burn rubber to that location. Cast in front of where you think the fish will be, leading him by about 10 feet.

In the in-between times, just troll the buzz bomb. But be ready to reel up quick and move to the surface action!

To me, this is just about THE most fun kind of fishin there is. When it's on, it's ON. And kayaks have the advantage over PBs cuz we can turn on a dime and move to the action stealthily. Good times.

...and don't forget to drop a couple crab traps!

Cool, thanks. What size and color on the buzz bombs for the coho? I think I just have pink ones from last summer.

Coho will hit the pink ones but silver ones are better. 2in size.

Thanks Rory. You ever fish Krocodiles or other spoons with a bit more length and flutter than the buzz bomb? I've talked to some guys who hit the sound hard for coho and actually think buzz bombs rate pretty low on the spectrum for triggering fish. You can sure cast them a long ways though.

I haven't but I can't see any reason why they wouldn't work!
