Where can you actually find Big Hammers around PDX? Ling Banger kicked us down a couple and I'm hooked. It's funny your go to is 3 oz, I love fishing a 6 oz. The 6 oz jigs are 3.60 each plus 89 cents for the plastic bodies at fishermans. I want to switch to the cheaper 3-4 oz jigs but I really like the extra weight of the 6s.

I just don't have big guns like you  ;) and get tired bouncing the extra two ounces all day.  If it is nice and calm, I like to use two ounces.

4oz for lings and 1.5oz for blacks is all I use.  A couple 6oz are nice for real windy days but for average conditions they are a tad overkill.

Look for Q Cove swim baits they sell Big Hammers under their brand. Look for the H on the tail.

Well I'm definitely going to be headed to a sporting goods store when I'm in the PDX area.  I can't get anything I need from over here (except online).

Does anybody chase sturgeon in the rooster rock area this time of year (june)?  I think it's still open year round there. This might be a good way to spend  Saturday June 9th.

will be at DB for ORC if all works out at Sunset while I'm there from 6/1 to 6/6. I f I see any of ya'll and you can give me tips it'll be a good thing. I can't find any of the heavier jigs etc that ya'll are talking about. Hope I can get them up there. See you on or around the salt. My list is getting checked off and will be leaving Tx next week.

Awesome to hear you'll make it! There will be plenty of places along the coast you can pick up the jigs. You can even buy them at the Shell gas station at the entrance to Depoe Bay.

That's good to know.  I usually lose a lot of gear :P

My personal favorite weights of jigheads is 2-4 oz.  I mostly use 3 oz. For the 10 inch grubs, I will occasionally break out a 6 oz.

I have lots of soft plastics you can borrow.  The only catch is I get to keep any prizes you win. >:D ;D.  But seriously, they are my "crack".   Every time, I see them on clearance, I can't stop myself from buying them and Dick's always seems to have them on clearance. So, if you are not sure what you need, or can't find any, you're more than welcome to borrow some.  I have a drawer full in my garage.

These Kalin's Big N 10 inch grubs work well. I use glow in the dark and white.  Why? Because I can get a two pack at Dicks for $4 and they work.  I can get a 5(?) pack of the 6 inch Mogambo grubs for about the same price.  They always seem to have them on clearance.  I catch more fish on the six inch, I catch a  larger percentage of Lingod when I use the 10".

Berkley also has a saltwater Gulp version for about $6 for two.

I prefer the Big Hammers, but they are hard to find around here.  I find myself melting my favorite Big Hammers back together with my soldering iron after every outing on the salt because they have major MoJo.

I also add a shrimp fly above, but I don't use a dropper loop.  I found really big fish would sometimes break me off at the dropper.  Instead I shorten my mono leader to about 4 feet and attach it to a swivel.  I clip a shrimp fly to the same swivel using a ball bearing swivel. This also makes it easier to swap out the fly for a small grub or small minnow soft plastic.

Craig, thanks for all the info...great!
Dave

Englund Marine in Newport is the closest place to stock up on tackle near DB. You can pick up jigs at the Shell, but you pay a lot more. Plus Oregon Oyster Farm is only another 6 miles up the road. Kumamotos are delicious raw, or get mediums for the grill. Steam them open, apply Tabasco and grated Parmesan or Manchego. Puts lead in your pencil, while you pick up the lead for the groundfish.

So I've got a few more days to figure out where and what to fish for.  It looks like the weekend will be targeting Sturgeon, what should I do between that and Depoe?

I've never Yak fished any of the other water over there so I'm open to suggestions.  Preferably on the way (or close to) from PDX to Depoe Bay.

Thanks!

I'm also going to need camping areas if you have any to recommend.  The PDX area is going to be tough for this i think :(

I will be available for fishing starting Tue the 12th after setting up camp.  Shoot me a line if you want company.  I plan on hitting the tourney grounds as much as possible up to Saturday to learn them.  Would love to not be solo Tue and Wed.  I know a few others will be ready Thursday and Friday to fish with.

Looking forward to seeing and fishing with everybody!
