Since this will be standard operating procedures for the ORC, it is best to practice it now.
Noah mentioned it in his original post, but I would like to mention it again so everyone is clear.

When it comes to shooting the hole at Depoe Bay, you have two options:
  • Have your own VHF and be on channel 80
-Know the comms procedures mentioned in the Depoe Bay info thread and use them.

  • Go through the hole with someone that has a VHF.
where's the Depoe info thread?

where's the Depoe info thread?

Here is the info that Depoecod (local resident) gave on the Official ORC info thread:

I don't know if I will be able to make the Saturday hunt.  The pension just isn't enough so I am working part time (at WorldMark, just up the street).  I'm gonna see if I can get that day off, BUT, I only get a limited amount of vacation time and my son is getting married in August and I'm making the wedding cake.   It will be VERY difficult to be at work, cleaning patios and the like, and looking out at all those kayaks on the salt, havin a ball!

On another note.  Since I live here, I think I can state, rather astutely (is that a word?) that Rawkfish has the signaling idea, Spot on (no pun intended).

MOST vessels do not signal entry or exit of the throat with an air horn.  In fact, the only one I ever hear (from my house) is the Coast Guard.  They signal every time.  But they have strict guidelines.  In my talks with the officer(s) on duty, it is general knowledge that a VHF radio and announcements are FAR more required and usefull than an air horn blast.  It is extremely rare that I see or hear a vessel enter or exit without an announcement on channel 80.  When it does happen, it is usually a visiting vessel (not one I recognize).  Likewise, it is extremely rare that I see or hear a vessel enter or exit with the use of an air horn blast.  In fact, in my two plus years here, the only vessels (other than the Coast Guard) that I have heard use a horn blast, was a kayak in the group I was in at last year's ORC.

So, radio, YES.  Horn...... well, if you want to, but it's not frequently heard outside of the throat anyway.  And when you announce (for that day at least) announce HOW MANY kayaks are coming out.  The charter guys will appreciate that, instead of idling and waiting and guessing.

Last thing, then I'll shut-up.  The throat IS curved, and prevents one from seeing the ocean side (or harbor side as you enter).  The natural curve is to the right, when exiting,  as you get near the end of it.  For that reason, I suggest kayaks stay to the left side of the throat.  That way, as you make the curve, you will have sight alignment of the opening to the ocean sooner than if you were on the right.  Single file (as mentioned) and probably limit it to 4 kayaks at a time.  The next group should hold back a few minutes before going out.  And as soon as you exit (I'd guess about 100 feet out) head to the north or south to get out of the vessel channel.  Depending, of course, on where the breakers are, if any, the current, wind, etc.  And hey, the fishin ain't bad just a tad bit out anyway!   ;D

Noah - I believe there is a guy visiting from Texas who plans on being there early. He was fishing with CBY earlier and mentioned he would be a Chinook Bend on the 14th. My guess is he would like to get on pre-fishing - you early arrivers should be able to identify a Texan pretty easily  :)

We'll keep an eye out and mock his accent and legal system when we meet him :)

If anyone needs some immersion gear, I have a spare wetsuit and semi-dry top. They wetsuit should fit someone who is around 5'9" to 6'1" and on the slim side. The semi-dry top is an XL but would fit anyone 160 to 210ish. PM me if interested.

Marie and I are gonna hit Portland Thursday night for some Vegan Burgers.

Going to have some fun at Casa Diablo?

Meat is on the pole not on the plate!  :whip2:

If I can make it will you show me some good spots to fish?
Sure. My usual strategy is pretty simple. You just locate this dude in a yellow adventure and then just follow him around and do what he does. Seems to work pretty well!

I follow him because he has a Shark Shield.  ;D
