What does a guy need for halibut? I will soon have a tiger and a big game 7001... But not before a proposed halibut trip.

Apparently a barbie pole will suffice, but you may want something a tad beefier.....say spiderman

my favorite setup was an avet sx 2speed reel with a tuna stick I think ts3080.. 6' was my limit, maybe that would differ on a yak. definitly suggest roller guides on first and tip, eliminates that buzzing noise, less line fray, andbetter casting (also easy replacement).. they were primarily my tuna setups and worked fine.. I take my time playing fish so I stay away from really heavy duty setups

Would it be correct that a tiger stick and a reel that takes, say 150 yards, of heavier braid would do the trick... in other words the same setup people might use for sturgeon?

Plan on having to jig with 10 - 24 oz of lead. I would say that 250 yrds of braid is minimum. I prefer 50#. 2 speed is not necessary.
Never used a 7000 but if it can crank 16+ oz back up then you should be fine. I have seen 35 pound fish landed on a 6500. Though he was defiantly under gunned.

I've got an avet 2 speed reel mounted on a 7'6" tiger stick.  Haven't caught anything huge on it, but it's doing the trick so far.

Okuma TG30 2 speed on a 7'6" medium heavy Tiger stick, a Penn 4/0 Senator on a 7'6" medium heavy Tiger stick, or a Dolphin Electric drive Penn 6/0 Senator on a (....you guessed it....) 7'6" medium heavy Tiger stick.  The electric drive sure makes the 48oz 1300ft bait checks a breeze, but you still have a handle if you want to fight the fish in a conventional manner.

The power boat crowd tends to go huge with their halibut terminal gear. Mostly due to fishing 500+ feet deep and having small man parts. For a kayak I am in the less is more crowd and the most weight I will fish with is about 24 oz. I have tried 32+ and it just sucks from a kayak.
I know someone who has had awesome sucess with a Tekota 500.

LOL.......will my man parts get bigger the more I fish out of my kayak or is that something you have to do with the manual bilge pump?  If it's the latter I'm going to use this.

Someone mentioned a roller tip for your rod--I wouldn't use a roller tip if you are going with braided line as it can slip into the side of the roller and create problems.

I recently got a tiger lite jigging rod for buts and big lings.  It is lighter and shorter than my regular tiger stick.  For a reel I have an abu garcia alphamar that I really like.  You can sometimes find the reel for 30% off on amazon.

I use a Abu 7001 HS and an Ugly Stik Tiger Medium.  I run 50# braid and have about 300 yards on the reel in case I hook something at 300' and it decides to run.

On the other hand, I've never caught a halibut or sturgeon with this rig.  I have caught a fair number of lings on it.  I used a 10 oz ball, 22" spreader bar and Z2 squid on it for about 18oz total and the rig handled it well.  I think 24oz may be pushing it.
