Spent some time today scouting the coast and stopped in at the charter place at Depoe Bay and chatted with them for a while.  They wanted to make sure that the word got out, which I told them it has, the following:

Please do NOT fish right in the channel after leaving the bay.  This upcoming weekend is going to have a lot of power boat traffic as it is a no-depth halibut day.

I mosied up to Boiler bay and threw a grub off the cliffs while watching about a dozen whales and caught two underlings.  Good times.  Looking forward to seeing everybody for ORC!

This is specifically stated in the rules on the official announcement.

OlySpec,

Thanks for reaching out to the Charter operators!

This being an All Depths day means we'll all need to be extra vigilant in our use of resources and procedures for entry and exit.  Let's make sure we represent NWKA well out there!

Speaking of charters did anyone happen to be put off a little by one of the bigger blue charter boats (know the name just not saying) cutting right through what would have seemed to be at least  a dozen of us at pretty good speed around 7:30 up a little north  of the bay. None of the other charters seemed to have a problem swinging out to the west of us on there way north. I had to pull up my line and get the boat turned 90 degrees to make sure the wake didn't make a swimmer out of me. and I was really struck by his speed.

I can't remember the name of the boat that played a not so fun game of chicken with a few of us last year I just hope there isn't a captain that doesn't like kayakers.

Me and Zee had a nice interaction with some surly boaters at the ramp.  They pulled up as we were (literally) running to our cars to stow our wheels, and pitched a fit.  I couldn't frickin believe it. Coast Guard was standing right there and didn't say a thing.  I understand we gotta be cool with the locals, but I don't think that means kowtowing to outright douchbaggery.

I had a blue charter (the kadaho with the trade winds) boat change his course on his way back  in came pretty close and gave me a good wake.  It was an intentional move by the captain he could have matained his course to give me wide berth.  If I had not turned into the wake it would have been pretty dicey.

I guess we could let the charter boat captains know well in advance that most if not all of us kayaker's carry one if not two cameras, and have them at the ready at any moment to get dangerous activities on video.   There wouldn't be much of an excuse for them to use if they hit or caused significant wake to dump one of us with all the bright colors we fly/wear.

Personally, I haven't had any issue with any of the charters, or recreational power boats coming into my view to date.  Most steered clear, or slowed, waved, and gave me the "catching anything?" gesture.   8)

The same guy put me up against the wall in the channel a few weeks ago. The Coast guard was pretty upset with him until he backed out of the way. His excuse was that I looked like a seal. Funny thing, I haven't seen an electric blue blue seal to date.

Sharing that narrow channel with that very large boat is not a situation that I want to repeat.

Yea Tx, I saw that blue boat, I wish I had it on camera/video I had a good angle too. Unreal. Dare I say reckless?

Found this on the Oregon marine board's website, admittedly it seems geared to recreational boaters but still.

We were fishing by said blue boat up north and after he finished a drift he started his engines and made the comment "let's see if we can run over some kayakers." Douchebag. Every other powerboat I came across was nice, there are always some bad apples and he obviously doesn't think we belong there.

Hmmm   might have to put some scuba gear on for an underwater mission.    A strong rope tied to his prop ought to do the trick.... >:D      :spittake:

One of the big charter boats slowed down for me as he passed.     I was tying on a lure without realizing I'd drifted that far south,  right into the channel.    My Bad
    Thanks Eric, for posting that.

Personally, I don't think it's worth getting bent out of shape over a boating running through us.  We share the big blue with him.  If we both didn't have thick skins, either we get pissed off over him running through us, or he gets pissed off over having to change course.  Who's right here?  Neither?  Both?

However, pushing you up against he wall in the hole is completely uncalled for.

And a threat of running kayaks over out on the water would have resulted in something like this ... switching to channel 16, "Charter vessel Kadaho, this is kayak xyz off your abc side.  Please restate your intentions.  It sounded to me like you you were going to run some kayaks over.  Over."

Yea kadaho is the one that ran right through the middle of us. Does anyone know this guy to where they could ask what his problem is?
