If you had a 3-day weekend (and coincidentally all your buddies did, too) and wanted to camp and chase some lings and possibly dungees where would you head and why?

Hobuck, cuz it's awesome! I don't know about the crabbing there, but I have seen dead ones on the beach and there are plenty of cabs to be caught. The idea has been thrown around about taking pots on our next Hobuck adventure. I've never had a better time fishing the Pac from a kayak than I have from Hobuck. I was literally catching lings two at a time. Not a fluke on one drop, but over and over. Most were under ling or barely legal and released, but still a blast to catch.

Also, to be fair... I've never fished La Push, so it could be awesome too.

BTW, this stringer of fish was from roughly 2 hours of fishing between Lee and I

Yeah dude, you can't beat the the beach front camping and killer fishing.  Plus, if the ocean is angry, you can usually fish the straight.  Oh, and it's WAY out there, so you might see a power boat...maybe.

Cool cool, it looks like what we're looking for - change of scenery - but wanted to confirm we shouldn't be going to LP instead (original plan was Hobuck).  What's the deal with all the fees - i.e. the car fee, if you are paying the tent fee do you still need to pay the $15/day parking fee or is that just if you want to access their beach and aren't camping?  Also the 'recreational permit', most people on BD don't seem to be buying that, is that a necessity or if you're fishing the ocean are you cool with just the WA license?  Searched briefly but couldn't find any answers.

If you pay for camping, parking and recreational permit is included.  You only need the recreational permit to explore around, and you get it from the office where you check in.  They might charge you for extra cars though, that's pretty typical of most places.

Lee is right... it is for extra cars... iirc it is one car for every tent paid for... you can get the permit almost anywhere, or nowhere... I have never been asked to show mine... but it is a good way to support the town, supposedly they use the money to keep the beaches clean.  btw - don't plan on someone being in the office.  The couple of times I have been there I has not been anyone in the office, even in the middle of the day, but this is typical for the bay - just roll with it.

i have enjoyed my trips to hobuck and agree that it is a better option for fishing but the fees are brutal for camping there.  they are right when they say location...location... location  :)

Cool, $20/tent is in line with all the state parks I've stayed at the past few months (tho I guess we could have had a 2nd/3rd/whatever tent at the same rate), though from what I've heard the toilets can be a bit...umm...."questionable".  If anyone else is headed there this weekend I'll be in a black sooby with a 'change for a nickel' sticker and our group will have red, yellow (shark fodder, obviously) and green kayaks

I didn't think the bathrooms were bad at all.  Except for when that guy got in the shower with me...  :banjo:

Hobuck is the giggles and $20 a night is pretty damn good. The camp ground is very low key and you are pretty much on the honor system. We usually end up paying on our way out and have gotten nothing but smiles.
The bathrooms are usually pretty clean and there is an indoor shower for cleaning your and an out door shower plus hose for cleaning your gear.
Fishing can be red hot or dead.... but haven't had too many dead days. The weather is the more important factor. Big swell makes for a tough launch.
I may be out there is weekend depending on work. Look for a Yellow and camo OK t-13's. If you see a brown and white German Shorthair running around the campground like it is the greatest place on earth then we will be near by.
Never done any crabbing but it is worth a try.

Only thing to note is that the res is officially "dry" so if you are asked about booze by tribal police just say no. It also does pretty good at keeping the loud drunk kids from camping there too.
Enjoy.

Oh, and it's WAY out there, so you might see a power boat...maybe.

it's a sad state of affairs out at neah bay these days.  ohbryant and i were out there on tuesday and both commented on how dead the marina and camping areas were in town.  this is the opening week of salmon fishing and the place is a ghost town.  it used to be hopping during any kind of chinook opening.  not many boats passing us inside the strait either.

it is nice as a kayaker dealing with less boats but it is a bit hard to see.

It's a madhouse during recreational Halibut season.  With fuel prices dropping, salmon interest might pick up.
