We think we're heading to the Kasilof this week to harvest some reds -- and of course I'm thinking about adapting the traditional dipnet excursion to incorporate the kayak into the harvesting. I know I can't handle my 5' hoop from the Revo, but suspect that a 2" hoop (the Chitina net) on a 6' handle could get me where I need to be straight down in the water column... I'm thinking just drift downstream with the current into the salt, net at my side for whatever swims by, and then collect whatever fish show up in the net right there until offloading on the beach.

Anybody else interested?
Anybody see obvious flaws in my plan?

If it doesn't work out, I'll just stand on the bank with everybody else and pluck my sockeyes from the drink with the big net. We use all of our household limit from the Kenai and Kasilof (35) every year, supplementing with a usually a single supper fish from my frequent hook-and-line expeditions.

I'd say the only drawback to your plan right now is there appears to be very few fish in the rivers.  But that can change any day!!!!!!!

Before we got serious dipnetting reds with the 5ft turbo nets, we hammered them just fine with regular landing nets.  It only takes one to say you did it!  here's something to motivate.  It's obviously from a powerboat but 50 reds in 50 minutes.  My friends were complaining that this was a SLOW day.  They got 250 I think the day before!

I think a one foot net would have worked on the Kenai on this day!

Still waiting for the reds to show -- but this week might mark the start.  Talk about your target rich environment: on Wednesday I'll be targeting halibut again off Deep Creek, and since I'm already down there I'll take a few drifts on the Kasilof with a net for sockeyes. Then on Friday, I'm back to Seward to prospect for silvers for two days.  All of this presumes that everything I'm responsible for in Anchorage is well managed.  Fingers crossed, as always. If any of these fishing opportunities interests any of you, I'd love company.
