So, looking at the most recent ODFW report for the southwest Zone. They wrote about Sturgeon in Coos River:

"For a change of pace, anglers could consider going sturgeon fishing. Popular sturgeon spots are just upstream of the highway 101 bridge for boaters. Bank anglers catch some sturgeon from the Coos River downstream of the confluence with the Millicoma. Sturgeon also hang out at this confluence."

I check the report often and this is the first time in quite a while they wrote anything about Sturgeon...
The map at the link below gives a great idea of the area. Click on hybrid and pull the map down until you see the Sherman AVE/101 going across water. Thats the bridge, obviously. If you hit the + zoom twice, you can see Ferry Road pretty close to the bridge, Thats an easy beach launch. Farther south is California ST. Theres a boat lauch and dock there.

I'd like to get out there and try this area. If i just had someone with a little 'sperience to go with me... I know theres a guy at Englund Marine that wants to fish Sturgeon on a Yak, but hes a newbie , also. So, anytime anyone wants to go, let me know, ill be there..

Coosbay,
I am a newbie to much of the fishing stuff.
But, if you find a guide that can show us how to fish for these brutes, I would love to make the trip up yer way and fish with ya.
I can prolly round up a buddy or two as well.

I'll look around, I dont think there are very many actual guides here, i couldn't find any listed. There all down your way box. Mostly charter boats here and they go for rock fish and buts mostly. I'm gonna ask around at Englund Marine and the harbor see what i can dig up.

If i had a couple people to go with me , i'd just wing it on the Yaks, spend the 100 + bucks on  gear. Get as much info on the techniques they use for the Columbia and just do it. Anchoring is the major thing i worry about, but, i don't think the current is that bad here. I think im gonna Kayak out there sometime in the next few days, just to see what the current is like, get a feel for it. I'll post a update in a few days.

Thanks Coosbay!,
that sounds like a good idea, to check out whether we can even do it with the current.
I have Yaked in the Estuarian Reserve, and found the tide can be fast at leaving and water all but dissapeared!
I'll keep an eye out for the post.

I talked to Todd hannah:
http://www.theoregonangler.com

I think hes pretty busy fishin for Steelhead. He doesn't fish the Coos River. Mostly the Umpqua. So, he said he could do a Sturgeon trip next week or in May. Too soon and too late..Still gonna look for someone that fishes the Coos for Dinos.

Todd did tell me about some spots up the Umpqua river on HWY 38. Brandy Bar, Boat launch and supposed to be an island or something, Anchor in 25 feet of water. Could launch from Scottsburg  park and drift down to brandy bar, which would be cool to do even if you weren't fishing.

The guy at Englund said they catch mostly oversized Sturgeon in the Coos system.

Thanks Coosbay,
I googled all the rivers up the Coast a ways, easy to find the island.
I love to Yak even if I am not fishing so the fish would be a bonus to the great drift!
I am a C&R kinda guy any how, never thought of brining one of those monsters home.
I'd rather eat Greenling over any fresh water fish. got kelp!? ;D

Those Greenling are tasty:

There are a few other salt water fish id rather eat then freshies.Especially the fish that love to eat greenling.

Last time i ate sturgeon, i was just a kid, so i don't remember what it tasted like . I hear there very tasty and i also heard your not supposed to eat alot of it each year, because of there bottom feeding ways. I mainly just want the thrill of the catch and a pic of my grinnin mug holding  one for my Avatar..
