Howdy from a Mendocino California Newbie

Hi Everyone,

I'm an old newbie from the Northern California Coast, near Mendocino and Fort Bragg, California, and I hope you don't mind me joining joining the NWKA.  I joined the NCKA a few months back and am just beginning to learn so much.  Polepole and Zeelander and so many others on NCKA are a few of my teachers, although they may never know or want to admit it.

I'm an amateur kayaker and even worse as a fisher, but I learn fast and am an expert at getting mussels at low tide.

I have a Hobie Sport kayak, a special woman-friend, two boys happily married in college, and a cat.

I however, remain.  -Matt

P.S.  Do any of you ever target Humboldt Squid?

Welcome Hobie, and don't worry about status much, we're all learnin all the time.  So how is kayaking/fishing down in Cal. or you up in the NW now?

The Humboldts wash up on shore once in a while, (they've even been seen on Whidbey Island beaches, in Puget Sound) but I don't know anyone targeting them. I'd like to think that's because our fishing is too good!

Humboldt squid do show up off our coast.  I often hear about people encountering them offshore when looking for tuna.  Some of the salmon guys run into them every now and then too.  I don't hear too much about people specifically target them like they do in CA.  Not many incidental catches on the inside water either, but as PS says, they are there sometimes.

I brought up the Humboldt squid subject as a joke, because nobody wants to land one on a kayak.

I'll bet someone does this year though.
