I want to go chase some steelhead on the Big C. next week(ish). Boardman - Umatilla area.

I'm used to catching steelhead from the bank.  How should I be chasing them from the yak?

Anchor up or troll or ..... ?   gear tips?

thanks in advance.

You can go either way up there.

Some people troll Blue fox spinners but if there's enough current, you can plunk spin-n-glos or U20's on anchor.  Another method (if you know where they're holding) is to drift alongside the holding water and cast spinners at them.

If there are any cold water feeder streams in your range, target them.  The steelies like to cool off intermittently on their way upstream.

I'm looking forward to seeing your results!

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

I fish the lower Umatilla R for them with the blue fox spinners because the water is between 3-12ft deep.  The Big C is around 20ft and the current is too swift for the spinners to get to the proper depth.

Not a lot of cold streams in this part of the Oregon desert.
