Hey I just got a few hours tomorrow ( Wednesday) morning to fish. Will be fishing Pacific City. Will try to be on the water by 6:00 and will be fishing to around 9:30. I'll be on VHF channel 69. Hope to see another Kayak.

Late report. Fishing was slow for first couple hours. Then in my last hour of fishing I got three blacks including an AOTY upgrade. Interestingly it had a pretty good bite taken out of it. Not sure if it happened while on my line or earlier but it was fresh. Another interesting thing that happened was getting into Mackarel on my way in on a little white grub. Got about five in ten minutes. Very enjoyable little fight. C&R all of them.

Thanks for the report!  The mackerel are pretty cool - they remind me of SoCal.  That's a beast of a black!  :o

The mackerel are a neat change out there.  Last trip out I was getting lots of short biters, so I downsized my jig and caught a bunch of mackerel.  I could find the schools suspended mid depth  with the sounder and then it was game on.

So have you'll done anything with the mackerel? Either eating them or catching for bait or have you'll just fished them for sport?

I kept and froze 6 of them.  They make awesome halibut bait, I am also going to play around with using filets off them to wrap kwikfish for fall chinooks.

TXP
i know some north easterners who fry them, pickle them or treat them like salted cod, so there has to be some food value there.
As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.

Anyone ever smoked mackerel? I've heard they're even more than just palatable hotsmoked.
To capture the fish is not all of the fishing. Yet there are circumstances which make this philosophy hard to accept.

I'm heading out next time with the proper sized sabikis and I hope to catch enough to experiment with culinarily.  Smoked, salt grilled etc. etc.   Also have plans for a couple of live ones ::)

I always just used them for bait.
