Ok let me rephrase what the Humminbird employer said to me on another forum. "I've heard of Di working through some plastic hulls."

The bottom mapping on the Navionics Gold Chip is freaking fantastic!

Thanks, good to know. Do you know if there is a difference in the actual maps between that and the West hot maps?

It works fine. Ling Banger has the same unit and has said he can see his jig head jumping around on it. On my Lowrance Mark 4 the quality was the same whether it was directly in the water or shooting through the hull.

I can confirm that a Humminbird technician assured me that DI works fine through a plastic kayak.

That being said, I was having problems with mine.  Not the down imaging per se.  But getting an accurate bottom readout when in 200 Khz mode.  The 455 KHz mode works just fine.  That seems counterintuitive what I would expect to be as issue with higher frequency signals.  That being said, I think I may have found the problem.  I think I accidentally crimped/pinched/damanged the wire when running it though a cable clam.  I didn't figure this out until I moved the unit to another kayak that had a scupper hold transducer mount.  I noticed the pinch, and then when I still had similar problems, I put 2 and 2 together.  The cable must be damaged in the right way to affect the 200 KHz signal more.  Anyway, I have a new 'ducer on order and will confirm the results once I get them.

The kayak shouldn't matter, but LB has a T13 and I have a Revo.

Hey Allen, in what situations do you use the different frequencies?

Hey Allen, in what situations do you use the different frequencies?

I always have a split screen display on, so the answer is both.  If you know how to read it, it is very useful.  The lower frequencies (like 50 or 83) have a wider cone, so tell you what might be going out to the sides a bit more.  The higher frequencies have a narrower cone so tell you what's going on more directly beneath the boat.  But ironically the higher frequencies have lesser depth penetration, which is why it was counter-intuitive that that I had to switch to the higher frequency to get an accurate depth reading.

This is where things get tricky.  Your traditional dual fishfinder uses 50/200 or 83/200.  The newer DI ones (from HB) use 200/455/800.  They use 200/455 in normal dual mode or 455/800 in dual DI mode.  So you kind of lose the wide coverage with the DI units.

I too have the Navionics chip in a new Lowrance elite 5 w/GPS and LOVE IT. I was concerned about the software when I first installed it, but now really glad I have it. Its shows all my favorite reefs with pretty good detail. I decided against the Down Imaging after the Lowrance rep talked me out of it. He said they aren't nearly as effective in the salt especially over 50 feet deep, so I just went with the regular elite 5 w/GPS and Love it. The 5" color screen doesn't suck either.

Any downside to mounting the 597ci DI transducer in the Trident 11 scupper? Seems like a simple, clean install and would give accurate temp. Should be able to wire straight to unit without drilling into hull, no? Can the cable be cut shorter or do you need to coil it up? After reading a few zillion reviews I'm kind of salivating about getting this FF.

Here's a photo that seems silly to me, cable goes into and back out of the hull 2-3" away!?

The only done side it's a little bit more exposed, but not much. Don't cut the cable! I'm sure someone can explain it more clearly but I think the unit is calibrated for a certain length of wire or something? Plus you may want the extra length so you can move it over to the TI. The wires go inside the kayak for the power supply too.

WARNING!  The DI transducer on a 597 is long and skinny.  It did NOT fit in the scupper transducer location on my Ultra 4.7.  But is does in the larger scupper transduce location in my Ultra 4.3.  I don't have an Ultra 11 to check the scupper transducer location, or I would.

Humminbird does not recommend cutting the cable, although I've heard of a few people doing it successfully.  One could probably engineer the correct length, based on the impedance changes of the line when you cut it and the frequencies of the signals of interest.  The 597 transducer is not cheap.  $160-ish MSRP.  DAMHIK.

Marie's DSI gets good returns down to 40-50 feet shooting through the hull  (puck + water method)  It's also pretty much an entry level DSI unit, so you get what you pay for.

Installing a DI ff on a kayak that isn't made for offshore action seems a little overkill maybe?
