Installing a DI ff on a kayak that isn't made for offshore action seems a little overkill maybe?

There are other fish in the world besides ling cod and rockfish that like a bit of structure.  Just ask the millions of bass anglers that have really been the push for companies like Humminbird to develop these sorts of features.

It's an interesting discussion ... when is down imaging is useful?  A couple of things to keep in mind.  Down imaging doesn't emit your standard cone.  It's more of a slice that extends out to the sides of you kayak.  Also, the spread of the slice is narrower, than the cone of standard fish finders.  So ... is finer detail of a smaller area more important to you, or is less detail of a larger area more important to you?

Don't you get both in the 597ci HD DI?

Well, not necessarily.  Maybe.  Perhaps.

Per my previous post, the 597 uses 200, 455, and 800 KHz.  The "wider" setting on most non-DI fishfinders is 50 or 83 KHz.  So you lose that.  The 200/455 is used for normal mode.  The 455/800 is used for down imaging.

BTW, I made a possibly misleading statement in my last post when I talked about down imaging spread.  The slice that extends out is wider, but since it is a slice it is narrower in the other dimension.  Sort of an oval vs. a circle thing.
