Not my brightest idea, but I needed a barbless straight shank hook, so I grabbed a 2/0 Gamakatsu Octopus with the thought to bend out the angled eye.  I placed the bend in the flat portion of a pair of long-nosed pliers and squeezed.  SNAP!  PING!  The hook broke instantly sending the now eye-less hook into my reading glasses.   Luckily I suffer from age-related presbyopia and wear reading glasses for close work.  The hook left a nice scratch in the lens.

Quality hooks are hardened and brittle.

Glad you learned that lesson unscathed.  I have a special talent for getting anything possible into my eyes, so I always wear safety glasses for anything that resembles a threat to my eyes.

Even if the hook would have bent for you, I wonder if it would have maintained its integrity?

Since bending like you'd intended plastically deforms an object that is not really intended to ever permenantly deform after manufacturing I'm not too surprised that it broke.  And, as FishPimp mentioned it would be substantially weakened even if it hadn't broken.  Low cycle fatigue life on that kind of material is probably very poor.

I noticed the Gamakatsus break when trying to alter them.  It comes in handy when  trying to make a barbed on barbless  for ocean salmon. The  barb snaps right off.

And earplugs.  Being able to give advice to youngsters is one of the joys of advancing years.

USE SUNGLASSES and SAFETY GLASSES!
USE EARPLUGS!

UV eye exposure leads to cataracts.
Loud noise leads to tinnitus - ringing in the ears.

I was a framing carpenter for a decade in my youth, long before UV blocking sunglasses, sunscreen, and the use of earplugs.  And I lived the '60s and '70s loud music scene.  Never gave much thought to eye and/or ear protection until the '80s when I became associated with a recording studio and with people whose hearing was their livelihood.

Had cataract surgery a couple of years ago, and my ears ring constantly.

Don't forget the sunscreen!  I know a few people that have had bits and pieces removed from their heads, faces, and other body parts from years of sun exposure.
