So I was planning on fishing the Columbia next weekend with the crowds for a chance at some salmon.  I have never anchored up with the hog lines and was wondering what advice you guys have.
I have a standard 3# claw anchor with 200ft of line connected to a float and was thinking of getting a drift anchor to go along so that the wind does not push the kayak around.  any input would be appreciated.

thanks,

Get a bigger anchor.. 8lb mushroom works fine, I use a 15lb pyramid.  Drift socks aren't really necessary, if there isn't enough current to keep your yak straight there most likely isn't enough current to keep your gear running correctly.  Practice deploying and retrieving your anchor and float a couple times before you join the crowds.

I went yesterday and had trouble getting my 5 lb claw grabbing.  I meant to use my 15 lb boat anchor but forgot to grab it.  The 15 pound worked well today until I tried to re-position it.  Then my rudder control came loose and I had to improvise to keep fishing.

I would suggest going higher than an 8 lb mushroom unless you let out a lot of scope(well over 100 ft.).  I have tried an 8 lb mushroom and I don't think it could ever cut it unless you were able to stick it right in one of the troughs on the bottom.  I use one of INSAYN's ~12 lb. pyramids and that holds well as long as I have at least a 3:1 scope.

An 8 lb mushroom works OK, but you need a lot of scope.  This weekend I needed over a 5:1 scope to stick.
