Was a great time for sure!! Thanks again kykfsher for pulling this together!! The Dogfishing was supreme ::)  I had one that was a solid 5.5ft! It's head was next to my hip while it's tail was slapping the tip of my bow!

I'm likely headed back to the John's Fri the 5th. I'll post a hook up thread if anyone wants to meet up. The PB's absolutely cleaned house out there, and I took notes on the few things different between their rigs and what most of us were using.

Great event, thanks Kykfsher for putting this together!!  I think we kinda threw the PB's for a loop as they seemed dumbfounded by all the yaks and our setups.  Good to meet/re-meet everyone again.  I cant wait for the next event!!

Thanks for all the kind words and I totally agree, this needs to be an annual event. Thank you Kykfsher for all your hard work.  What an awesome fishery!

Mark, thanks for carving the trophy I love it.  I would also like to thank Pixster for taking photos of the battle and taking my glory shot.

I had another on earlier and the leader broke when I was just able to see the flasher.  :'(  When I got this one up for the initial netting attempt, which led to a whole lotta line ripping back out, I told Nate that I would probably start crying if I lost it.  After three or four more runs from the kayak, I got it in the net and went a little bonkers with the bonker.   Pixster got it on video and I think Nate may have as well.  I am scared to watch it because of how brutally insane I must have looked bonking it.  Not as brutally insane as Spot repeatedly punching his coho with his fist, but close  ;).  That man is no sissy, he takes his bonking personally.

Here is a shot of the fish next to my 3 1/2 year old daughter.  To give some perspective as to the size of the fish, she is 8 feet tall and drives a monster jacked up mini-van (in the background).  Can you tell she got a little slime on her hand.

We also need a new DAMHIK catagory for "what did I break while bonking a fish".  Me... I no longer have an Olympus Camera.  I had a couple good whacks on the head and unfortunately I fouled one off into left field. What can I say, I was a pitcher. I believe my camera caught it in the chin.  It was in the mesh cargo compartment by my feet (next to the salmon head) in the Adventure.  The camera still takes pictures, I just can't tell what I am aiming at, nor can I see them on the camera.

Well, I better get back to setting up my corporation to handle all the endorsement deals I expect I will soon be getting. ;D

Way to go, Craig. Too funny! Is that agency protocol for apprehending an uncooperative suspect? Clever of you to destroy the camera, plausible deniability.

Can't wait to see the videos, I'm sure PETA will be very excited.

Thanks for posting that picture Kykfshr.  When I saw Rory running up with a last minute entry, I was a little worried the photographer may have jumped the gun a bit.

First off I would like to thank everyone who helped out with this event.  Mark Collett created a great looking trophy and also helped out with getting swag from the Dennis Company ,thank you Mark.  PolePole came through with some great prizes from Scotty and Yak Attack.  islandson671 secured the bling from KoneZone as well as gift certificates from Sportco, Sportsman's Warehouse and Wholesale Sports.  I would also like to thank Mike Coverdale from the Westport Chamber of Commerce who provided two nights lodging from Westport Beach Escapes and a salmon Charter trip for two.

It was a lot of fun doing this and we are definately going to do this again next year.

THERE IS ONE MORE PRIZE TO GIVE AWAY.  FOR THIS AND FUTURE TOURNAMENTS.  IT GOES TO THE BEST VIDEO SO LETS SEE THEM.  THE WINNER FOR THE BEST VIDEO FROM THE SALMON SLAYRIDE DERBY GETS A $100 GIFT CERTIFICATE TO HOOK1.

Official results for the derby.  We had 18 participants. All were new to this fishery. 6 fish were weighed in.  The early morning bite was really good but everyone missed out on most of it due to lack of light.

1. Craig            15.939 lb chinook
2. NWNoob        7.71 lb coho
3. Spot              6.30 lb coho
4. TheNothing    4.96 lb coho
5. Fungunnin      3.94 lb coho
6. Rory              3.7 lb coho

The weather was great fun was had by all and $300 was raised for H.O.W.-NWest.  Thank you to everyone that came.

Congratulations to Craig the winner of the 2012 Grays Harbor Salmon SlayRide Derby.

Where was this picture taken ? I might have to use it as a model for my next carving.Need to find a bigger tree........ ??? ::)

Craig---1st..congradulations on taking the largest fish.
2nd...can't wait to see Pixster and Nates videos.Everyone loves a good "bonkin".
3rd....too bad about your camera. So much for being over-enthusiastic.
4th....not too sure about that little cutie being 8 ft tall. But we can tell...she ain't into fish slime too much. :: ::)
              5th...good luck with your endorsements.

Scott---It was my pleasure to put the trophy together.I hope you got the plague on it before the presentation.Next year...look for an even more impressive trophy. This stuff brings out my creative imaginational juju ---or something like that.
I have got a lot of ideas already spinning in my head for next year's Salmon SleighRide Derby. And Westport might be the main ingrediant...more on that later.............think salmon, lingers, and rockfish all within a couple of miles out of Westport.hmmmm ???

To everyone else---I am sorry I had to leave early and didn't get to go to the award ceremony.I'm sure it would have been fun--shuckin and jivin all of you.Plus sharing a few "adult beverages" while telling tall tales.Plus it is always great to put a face to a name and make future plans for more adventure.I will make that happen next year.........

ravdakot---I'll call you before the 5th about getting out there again.Might have a better option for you to consider....

Just a little side note............I am amazed at all the interest this derby has generated.Look at the numbers--The official thread has been read over 3300 times---the result thread has been read more than 359 times in 24 hours. That just blows my simple mind....
Pretty fucking awesome if you ask me.

   See ya on the water
                               Mark

One more thing--------love the idea of a prize for best video---that's outstanding motivational carrot dangling........bring on more pics..we all love this stuff. ;D

One more --one more thing----right on to all of us for raising $300 for HOW.Let's do better next year.

Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Kykfshr, thanks for putting on such a great tourney.  I am definitely going to try to make it back next year.  Craig congrats on the win, it was awesome seeing you finally get a legal fish in the kayak, and with no barbs to boot.

Pelagic, I ended up being too chicken to enter anything into the smoked salmon contest :( I thought a better way to approach it would be to taste the competition first, then enter next year. But I blew that too by showing up right at 5pm for weigh in.  Next year, limit early :D

I will cook up a nice big post about our derby with pics later today. Good vibes y'all. Good vibes.
