I think I am going to be able to get in a few hours at Pacific City on Thursday the 11th. Right now conditions look ok. If anyone else is interested I'll try to get there around 9:00 and may drop a crab trap. Just let me know. Will also have my VHF if you showed up later.

I am working on getting down there Thursday for my last chance this year as well.  If I can get away I'll be there at 0900 to meet up for the launch.  I went a week ago and the bite was on but the friend I took with me got seasick and we had to call it after about 30 mins.  We already had a nice ling and greenling by then as well.  It left me wanting one more trip before I get outta here, though.

Looks like I will be down there around 0730 for the launch.  I should be jigging around the north side of the rock with a friend of mine early on.  Look forward to seeing you guys out there!

I'm gonna miss it by a day! We're renting a house Friday and Saturday in PC. Was thinking about dropping a pot and playing in the surf anyways. Might have to crab the bay instead.

Good seeing everyone out there. Isaac nice job on the black rockfish. Ceph nice meeting you.

As for me. I got one smallish but keeper ling and tied for my personal best Cabby (24.5") but it got released obviously. I also used a new crab trap made for kayaks that I picked up in Canada and got three dungees on an hour and a half soak. All in all a good two and a half hours of fishing.

Best Ocean conditions that I have ever fished in, wish I could have stayed out longer.

Nice meeting you out there as well, TX.  I brought home a couple of Greenling for the day and also had to release a Cab, to my chagrin.  The black rockfish were in the kelp at about 20 ft down and man they were everywhere!  I didn't have the lure they were looking for and therefore couldn't get a single bite.  I have never really had any trouble getting rockfish on the line until this trip.  FYI, bring some spoons out there for the rockfish.  I heard they were the ticket.  ;)

I had an EPIC day.

Rule #1: sharpen hooks.
I've been using the exact same jig, leader and shrimp flies since June. I've snagged up a TON, caught a bunch of fish, and never touched the hooks. I missed some bites and lost some good fish because of that.

Rule #2: Follow the Birds.
Didn't you guys notice the silence on the rock? Birds were on the water, covering almost an acre of space. They weren't diving, but they were sticking to an area.

I paddled up to the edge of where the birds were, grabbed my light spinning rod which already had a 3/8oz PK Flutter Fish tied on for bass and walleye, and cast towards the middle of the pocket. BAM! Fish on! This went on for a good couple hours. I had blackies to the kayak every 2 out of 3 casts on some pretty light gear. I know I kept the first fish on the spinning rod. I also kept number 25. I stopped counting after that. Even the fly rod got some action, finally.

The birds were sitting on top of a HUGE ball of anchovies. Like I mentioned, they covered almost an acre of ocean. The rockfish were feeding on the anchovies about 25' below the surface. Too deep for most of the birds, but they were keeping close should the bait move up to the surface.

I did spend some time jigging on the bottom. No lings for me (same story from most of the dory fleet too) other than one underling. Also released a couple Cabs including a 12#er, and a nice sized flounder.

Pics are lame as I don't have a waterproof camera or video camera anymore... but... soon....

Yea that is why I added the "maybe" Part. The real challenge is more my schedule. From here until at least the end of the year I may be only able to fish one or two more non Sundays. And getting my Sundays to line up with decent ocean conditions and coincide with a fishing permission slip from the wife is going to be even trickier. With our first baby at home and only six months old its a little harder to spend the whole day away fishing. My parents were visiting from Texas and wanted to go to the beach this week so it worked out perfect that I had built in babysitters at least for a few hours. If I do see decent conditions again and am able to get out I will certainly send out a heads up.

I also used a new crab trap made for kayaks that I picked up in Canada

Details or pics on the trap?

I may try to put together a review of the crab trap tomorrow. BTW In the picture above I have the trap in my right hand with the three crab still in it. So you can see how small it folds down. And the crab were just sandwiched between mesh.
If anyone is interested I set the trap in 40 feet of water about 30 minutes before high slack tide and about a quarter of a mile and 150 degrees from the rock.
I did want to add that I weighed the crabs when I got home. The first two were 26 and 28 ounces. The third was 38 ounces. Man were they delicious and between four adults we almost finished them all.

What reel is that?  The Quantum Smoke?  How does it perform/how do you like it?  Sorry for all the questions, but its a sweet looking reel!!
I also noticed that reel, thats nice looking. Are you left handed? Hope all went well with the house stuff.

Hey TX. Good to see you are getting out. Hope you guys enjoyed your trip to Tofino this summer.

That is a great trap. I bought one last year. Haven't used it much but i really like how compact it is when it folds down.

Nice catch btw.
