This is more fishing than kayak related.  From what I can tell, the vedder isn't fishable in our vessels except at the canal (lower-most part).  And I heard that can be good at times.  It strictly whitewater kayakable almost anywhere.  But that ain't my gig.

Anyway, I fished the other end by the upper boundary yesterday.  And I found out why the Vedder/Chilliwack is in a class of its own.  The fishing is off the chain!  I hooked a bunch, broke off some big ones, landed a few donkeys and walked away with a couple nice brites out of the melee.

I don't really need a reason, but what will fire my next trip up (this afternoon, if I can swing it) was the "last cast".  I threw my sz 4 pink blue fox into some pocket water and something grabbed it and ran.  It was unstoppable.  There was literally nothing I could do.  He was going so fast that following him wasn't even helping.  When he had taken half my line I decided I should at least attempt to muscle him. Bad idea.  You can guess what came next.  The sound of that drag peeling, then the line snapping kept me awake last night. I....NEEED....MORE.

Thanks to ballardbrad for all his insight into fishing the vedder.  Couldn't have done it without him.

Not such a bad place to spend a bday.

I'm making this chummer look small, but he took me for a ride. And by a ride I mean he made me follow him down 100 yards of treacherous river rock.

Not a great pic, but I got two of the brightest fish I saw that day. The big ones a tenner.  THe fillets look Deee-LISH

Un-freaking-believeable Rory!!!  I've had days like that but not near enough.  Hopefully it's that good for you on your 2nd go out.

Made a lot of good memories to his music though.  Gotta go with Eddie .

Not sure why I've never fished the eddie vedder river before.  It's an hour from my house.  The fishing is mega cray-cray.  Those fish that were hanging out in the salt are running up the river in droves.  More fish poop on the truck gate!

Nice job Rory.  I have a few of those stories.  Those white "springs" (kings) can do a number on you.  A friend of mine burned out all the gears in his Calcutta on a fish a few years ago.  If you can keep their head up river and maneuver them into slower water, that can help but you don't always get that option.  I have a friends that just left there today having fished all week. They hooked several coho, chum and a few nice springs.  Sounds like the fish are on the move into the upper river with this rain.  I'll be up there next weekend.  Here's one my friend's sister caught a couple of years ago on the Chedder (Chiliwack/Vedder).

All the canucks want to hook is coho. They will break off a chum buck or a spring just so they don't have to fight them. It's basically like throwing the towel in the ring!! Only reason they land the chum hens is for their eggs.

Me, i want one if those monster kings.  for sure.

You're right about the coho.  Just make sure that fin is clipped.  I think the fine is $200K... yes that much for retaining a wild fish... I landed a 15 lb coho a few years ago and almost bonked it - thinking it was  a king...

I like the king fight as do most fishermen from the US.  I was told the springs were introduced into the river many years ago and flourished.

Those chums can be equally as strong.  Wait until pink season next year when all that frog water is full of fish.  It can be crazy up there.  You're smart to fish during the week to avoid the crowds.  I don't have that luxury.  Good luck~

Here's a spring from a few years ago.  Fished just up from Peach Road.  Hooked well over 100 fish over the coarse of two days.  Threw out my back but still worth it. :)
