I know a few of you take your dogs out on your kayaks but do you have a life vest for your dogs?

I'd like to take mine with me sometime but I'm worried what would happen to him if I flip in the middle of a lake or on the Big C.

What brands are good?  What positives and negatives?

Thanks!

Hey Justin-
I got a "paws aboard" one from fisherman's marine. My dog is extremely lean and I was worried about the same thing, especially after I read a story about a dog drowning on the Columbia last year. It's on the cheap side and if you get one I wouldn't use the plastic clip on the back to secure the dog to anything. My 30 lb dog broke the stitching off it when I had her tied to the car, as I was unloading. It fits pretty well though and the dog doesn't seem to mind it. The best thing is the handle. It makes it a lot easier to get the dog back in if they decide to jump out. Mine loves to chase birds and the sight of swimming ducks is a bit too much for her to resist. In the summer time she never seemed to get too hot, but she was wet most of the time. I took her out last month and she was shivering pretty well but I don't think it had much do with the vest.

I have the ruff wear brand vest. Found it new at goodwill for $3. The handle is probably just as important as the floatation it would be almost impossible to get my lab mix back in the boat without it.

I've got a ruff wear and an astral bird dog vest for my dog. Both really good especially as German Shepherds really don't float well. I think the cut on the ruff wear is a little better for my dog, though he is super lean

At least she could poop in the scuppers.

Get a Labrador.  No vest needed.  You will have a dog that shares many of your same hobbies and likes a good beer whenever they can steal one, or lap up a spilled one.  At least that has been the case for all of the labs that owned me.

Why use the scuppers when you have a poop deck on each trampoline ;)

I take my service dog with on lakes and very slow moving rivers. Jack went everywhere with me until I watched a video that showed just how dangerous it is to take a pooch out on the river. If the Kayak flips and you are in the Columbia. The odds are that you will become separated in the time that it takes you to self rescue. Finding and then saving your dog takes resources and wits that you may not have.

The coat that I use is the Ruffware brand. The have spent the time to make a coat that will hold up the head. Jack was in on the testing side. It is a good coat.

My dog hates me now.  lol  I suppose it will take a couple trips out before he realizes that the vest means he gets to go have fun.
