Ocean was beautiful Sunday.  10min of glassy calm followed by 5min of 7'-8' swells.  Arcadia was thumping.  Be carefull out there all.

"SEATTLE - Two kayakers were rescued by the Coast Guard after they were overcome by rough waters near Cannon Beach, Ore., today.

At 4:51 p.m., the Seaside, Ore., 911 center requested assistance from the Coast Guard after it was reported that the two kayakers were in distress near Arcadia Beach.

An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, Ore., was immediately diverted and hoisted the kayakers to safety at 4:58 p.m.

The victims were transferred to an awaiting ambulance crew in Seaside where they were transported to a local hospital. No serious injuries were reported."

Thank God for the Coast Guard, I can never say enough.  The Coast Guard saved my life as well in Crescent City, California about 25yr's ago.

I was caught in a rip tide while surfing and my board got away from me.  From nowhere, and I mean nowhere, a Coast Guard Kayaker came and saved my life by pulling me back to shore and then retrieving my board.  I remember being about a quarter mile from shore and not even being able to hear myself scream.  I had no protection whatsoever.  Not even a wetsuit.  I must have only been about 8yr's old then.

These guys are great, I can never say enough.  Great job!

I also have nothing but respect for the Coast Guard, and am now in the process of joining the CG Auxiliary.  Not that I want to be a hero, but the Auxiliary can always use folks with a little time and any skills to help out in all different ways.  You receive the same training as regular Coast Guard, except for law enforcement. You can spent as much time as you want in training, it's all up to you.  My major interest is simply in boat safety education, and learning to crew on CG vessels.  It's a little intimidating, as I have no military service experience, but I really want to contribute somehow. It would be more fun to join with a friend.  I'm joining near my home at Noyo, near Fort Bragg, Calif..  -Matt

Good luck with joining the Coast Guard.  I was a Marine and had a good time doing that.  Over the years, I have always wondered what my life would have been like if I had joined the Coast Guard years ago.

I have met many people over the years which claimed to have retired from the Coast Guard and enjoyed what they did for them.  This is sort of uncommon with the other branches of service.  I know one thing, they have very good duty stations (near water) and treat their people better.  You are more than a number you are a part of a tight little group.

The Coast Guard really encourages their people to be active in the community their in.  I know a handful in my area that are volunteer firefighters and reserve police officers.  Very good branch of service.  Good luck!
