FYI, 5 out of the top 10 AOTY anglers have caught surf perch!

And those 5 fish had an average points value of 161.25.  You wouldn't even make the top 5 with an average points per fish of 161.25.

-Allen

Now do the same analysis for Cutts and Panfish [ave pts of top 5 fish]. I'll bet it's >20 points lower than surfperch.

And my original statement was that surfperch were overvalued compared to Cutts and Panfish. I too like them tasty little buggers.

I'll take that bet.  What makes you think we didn't do the analysis when coming up with the current points system?  We mined the database to get the numbers.

As far as cutties being undervalued.  This is a perfect example of the issues we hit when assigning points.  I bet you a lot of you are within reach of a lake that hold Lahontans.  25 inches (a 200 point fish) doesn't seem too hard to hit now does it.  Shoot, target cutties in lake wa seriously enough and you'll learn how to consistently put big cutties in the yak.  But we all know that for most cutthroat fishing you're more likely to see something like a 14" average.

What's the right way to score this?  8 ppi making a 25" fish worth 200 points, or making an average size cuttie be worth, say 140 points (to make the math easy on me ... that's 10 ppi!).  If you score it the first way at 8 ppi, then an average size fish would be 112.  If you score it the second way at 10 ppu, then a 25" fish is worth 250 points and everyone would be complaining that it is overvalued.

This appears to be year 5 of AOTY, at least according to the leadership.  That should be noted because the numbers as they are seem good to me... I didn't know about trophy fish status etc, I just know that it is obvious people have done their homework because people are still participating.  The natural inclination with something of this nature is that it finds it's groove around this point in its lifespan.  Why not simply leave everything as it is and add pinks... since people seem to what to add them and they generally are an every other year fish?  And leave it at that.. While everyones input may have value, it may not be prudent to work something over that is already working well.

1. I'm ok with adding fish but do like the idea of 25 being a cap. I have a hard enough time trying to decide where to fish the next week with just twenty fish add ten more and I'll have a mental breakdown.

2. Just my two cents on the fish that should be added 1. Browns 2. Pinks 3. Muskie/pike 4. Dungenesse (25 ppi. I know its not going to happen and you probably think i already had that mental breakdown but a lot of people are pulling crab and it does take some skill and you can get some big ones and Small ones) 5. Sockeye

3. I think cabbies are still 1 PPI too high. And I say that with a cabbie as one of my biggest AOTY fish this year.

4. And here's just a thought, but in matters regarding dispute why not let everyone that wants to vote that participated in Aoty that year have a say. They could anonymously send Allen or a designated governor a PM. Where the question is framed so that the answer can only be Yes or No or a numerical value with brevity as the goal. After the question is answered everyone has a week to respond. That would solve the problem of "board" bias and give folks in outlying areas a say.

Just my three cents worth

Oh and is there any sort of international standard for trophy fish. I went looking but just ended up drooling over images of monster fish caught all over the world?

If you guys only knew how much data was mined and statistical modeling performed by the NWKA uber nerds in the course of setting the current ppi model........  It was a quality engineer's wet dream.

Thanks to all for putting in the time and effort.  I remember the post last season with data on how the ppi value for Cabezon came to be.

Just curious, have there been more 200+ point cabezon than any other species?

These are not the cutties you're looking for.

I'd love to see five more species added.

So yeah, maybe cabbies are a bit low.  But let's also face it, we have some monster cabbie slayers here.  I've seen more large cabbies come from you guys than I've ever seen.  I used to think a 25" cabbie was a monster.  No more.  We'll consider adjusting this one.

By looking at all of the submissions for chums it seems they are valued a bit high IMHO.  The lowest point value being 174 points.   :o   I have no knowledge of their actual natural size range though.

You may want to add Sea monsters to the list so Fungunnin can Find something Bigger to get next year.. ::) Nice Pics of all the fish this year. Congrat's to who ever is the 2012 winner (fungunnin at 9 fish is going to be Way Hard to beat.)

If to add a species, how about the Northern Pikeminnow? With a healthy ppi. Understandably not a sought after sport or food fish, but could help out our eastern brethren and maybe a Salmon or two.
Just a thought. I'll go talk to myself now.

Agreed. I have no illusion I can score >1100 pts with just 6 fish in a few days of effort. I'll stick to my local fisheries. Someone else can chase those sea monsters.
