Have you considered trying to add a skeg?  Perhaps midship on the side(s)?  Could be easily crafted, and with the mounting bars, seems like it would be easy to install/remove.

Not a bad idea. There's some speculation that it may make things worse because it would create an axis the boat would rotate on even more. But nobody's tried it and it's def worth a shot.

I have the PA 14 2013' and it tracks well. I have also read about this in the Hobie forum, I read the longer the yak the better tracking. This plus the storage area of the PA is why I went this way. I have used it in the Tillamook bay with 7' of water moving out and it handled a lot better then I thought it would and tracked well.

If/when I ever get one it will be the 14 ft model. I figure if I'm going to have a heavy kayak/boat I'm obviously not too concerned about transportation convenience since it will most likely be trailered. And I like the idea of having the extra 2 feet of space. For me it's along the same logic of owning a big truck or SUV, it's not for the gas mileage.

I have a PA 14 and I love it. it is a little heavy, but being 6'1" 230-235 I make a good counter weight. I haul mine in the back of my ford F-150 6'6" bed and with the tail gate down gives me 2 more feet. leaving about 3' hanging over and I tie a red flag to. Works good for me. Being out fishing in it is comfortable and really roomy. I don't think you will regret it. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

Thanks Bent Rod. It might be a little while before I get one as I just bought my Outback last year, but it will most likely be the next kayak I buy.

Is that for the PA12 or the 14?  By the age of the linked post I'd guess PA14.  Might work for the PA12?

I believe I read it was for both in the hobie forum. The comments were positive for the larger drum.

Still has the tracking problem Rory?  I am still awaiting the larger drum in the mail to see if it makes a difference in the steering.

Just saw this solution on the hobie forum.  (http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=46182&p=206541#p206541)

I have no idea how it works, but...it's a solution.  Guy says "Two rudders and it tracks straight as an arrow and turns on a dime. Twist and stow added to the standard flip up rudder and uses a large sailing blade."
