Quick question, I think....

Last year I caught some halibut that were difficult for me to get up onto my kayak -- and I'm going to be working on improving in 2013. Thinking back on that experience in light of the rules, I'm wondering if I could have counted the biggest halibut I caught last year.  It was hooked and fought from my kayak, and I managed to gaff it and haul it up onto my lap after it was exhausted (me too). But the guys I was fishing with that day rowed up beside me and took my gaffed fish off my lap and into their boat, where it stayed we finally called it a day and returned to shore.

I guess the question is whether I "landed" the halibut or not.  Wouldn't quibble with learning that isn't properly "landed" even if it was "boated".  After reading through this thread, seemed prudent to ascertain whether it's fair or foul.

Sounds to me like that would be a fair fish to post.  You fought it and landed it out of your kayak and did so without mothershipping to where you caught it.  The rules don't say anything about what you do after you land the fish unassisted in your kayak.

+1  I agree.  You got "assistance" AFTER you landed it.  If they weren't there, you could have just dragged it back to shore with ye old mirage drive.

At that point, you landed it.  It's no different than if you CNR'd it.  You just happened to release it into a boat!

Now if the boat guys happened to gaff it for you, that would be another story ...

... there is a big difference between gaffing a fish and controlling a fish and actually landing it.
I would think the fish must be fully subdued before handing it off to a power boat.
I have pulled large live halibut into my lap that were no were near controlled. I think having a power boat kill a fish for you should not count.

That's a clear enough distinction, even I can apply it. Thanks for clarifying it -- although this spring I'm going to deploy a flying gaff contraption that should make the issue moot.  Fish Dreaming, as usual.

Soon you will be going on another sleigh ride and landing a monster halibut.  My guess is that will happen in 138 days
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them
