Today while hunting I learned how to flip an Outback. listed below are the down and dirty details.
1) I shot over my left shoulder after shooting a first shot which rocked me back
2) I had a high center of gravity with deeks and fishing supplies
3) I had a dodger installed with bungee clips and tabs
4) I have extremely bad balance. Hence the name of Wobbler

To be totally honest, the reason that I hulied was due to a my bad choice of a shot. The reason that I rolled was due to my Dodger. I was not able to slide off, rather I slid onto the dodger which then toppled the Outback. Before we blame the Dodger, it is extremely important in the scheme of hunting. Hiding the legs and any movement is crucial to attaining your goal.

What I learned:
1) Leash the important stuff, I didn't loose anything due to leashes. Although my sturgeon pole and shotgun floated down to the length of the leash.
2) Be much more careful in my choice in shots
3) Be dressed for the water. I went over and spent some time in the water on January 3rd. one of the coldest days of the year. I was completely comfortable in my fleece Wader liners, drysuit and and PFD.
4) Always travel with a partner. Craig was instrumental in helping me flip the Kayak in current.
and
5) Have a plan to get out of your boat no matter what you have on or around you.
6) Buy your partner a good fifth of Scotch.

Glad to hear you are OK.  I recently changed they layout of my kayak camo because I realized if I flipped I may get stuck.  Were you able to get any ducks?

This is a  Raptor  sit in model.     Nobody has ever been able to flip this yak over while seated in the cockpit...  many have tried.

Nate, I was able to slide easily out of the dodger. And yes, I am OK. Bruised pride is the only casualty. It is amazing how well the tethers worked. Otherwise I would be down there today in my scuba gear. The goal for yesterday was to scout out possible destination hunts. (Notice how easily I dodged the bird numbers)

To answer the statement below. We tried one day to flip an Outback and couldn't. I think that the combination of Dodger which kept me from sliding off and my weight stuck inside completed the "impossible" role.

Glad you're OK Woobler. It all happens very fast and next thing you know its dark and cold. The panic sets in quickly, but staying cool and not panicing is paramount. Practice, Practice.... I'm really glad you had Craig with you. It definitely helps having someone else nearby to assist.

Would anyone be interested in practicing self rescues on a future date. Maybe it's time we have an "On the water self rescue clinic at George Rogers". If there are an takers, let me know and I will plan something soon.

I definitely would be interested. Maybe we can bring the sturgeon rods for some sturgeon C&R after we take a dunk or two.  :D

Glad to hear you're OK Wobbler.

The self rescue clinic sounds like a good idea. I haven't huli'd yet, but I know it will happen eventually.

Great idea but you might want to take it to a local pond or lake.  Less sewage and less chance of the current causing unforeseen issues.

I like the idea of doing it with some current. As long as there isn't a strong recent rain the sewage shouldn't be issue.
