What is the best way to attach tools (radios/knives/...) to a PFD that does not compromise the PFD materials?

What kind of PFD do you have?  I have used zip ties to attach stuff to PFD before but most of the stuff I have seems to already have a place because of all the pockets, leash tabs, and lanyard attachment points provided on most kayak fishing PFD's nowadays.

+1 on zip ties. Cheap, strong, and readily available.

Oh yeah, you've got plenty of options.  Either use the lanyard that comes with your tools, or fashion one up out of small chord that is about 2 to 3 feet long.  Use a cow hitch to attach the lanyards to any attachment point on your PFD you like so that the tools can be stowed in a pocket when not in use.

A knot that involved wrapping a line three or more times on two different planes in order to create a tight mass at the end of a line used for heaving.

Not only do I know what that is, I used to make them all the time for heaving lines while in the Navy.   ;)

I would zip tie a lanyard to the base of the antenna if there aren't any other places that would work.  Or you can get a VHF radio dry bag, which has a lanyard, and keep your VHF in that.  It will extend the life of your radio dramatically.
